as far as the ribbon you are right we need flames because there is not alot of help for my husband being a laryngectomee people to not know how to handle it here in central tx. They think just because Jerry can not talk he can not communicate at all. It is very frustrating

Hi Vicki Yes you can get ribbons for Mouth Cancer and they are blue (a sort of dusky blue) I have just enclosed one with each of my Easter cards I have sent out this week. I bought them from this site. Possibly not available in America and don't know how expensive it would be to have them posted but it might be worth enquiring (the contact is on the front page under "Support Mouth Cancer Awareness").

Perhaps we should start thinking about what we might do for Mouth Cancer Awareness Week this year. I don't know the date yet but it's never too soon to start coming up with ideas?!! Kind regards Brenda

Hello Brenda

This year's Mouth Cancer Awareness Week runs from November 13 (Sunday) to November 19 (Saturday). I will be attending a meeting of the MCAW steering group and will let you know more about what the central theme and activities planned for this year will be.

Yes, we should be starting to think about what activities we might want to organise locally that particular week to increase awareness.

Have a good Easter holiday, everyone.

Best wishes
Vinod Coffee

SmilerHello everyone, I do understand what Vickki Lynn means, breast cancer seems to get the most attention; all of my friends say " your doing so well, etc," I know they haven't a clue how painful head and neck cancers are; and somehow I have this feeling that food is to do with nurturing and comfort eating and people out there don't want us to upset, there lives, by coming out and telling them, you can stuff your face, and we cannot even swallow, and if we can it hurts like hell.Big Bear Hugs to you all, and thank you Dr Vinod for your time with us. Smiler

Hi Garance, I agree with you about the eating.
I had noodles for the first time in months.
Hope your feeling better.

greetings all. i just decided tonight to look for a site like this for my dad. he is 81 and had a laryngectomy in 1987!! he has done very, very well for most of the years in between, but i know he is starting to wear down and lose ground. his biggest problem now is with breathing. he seems to be getting increasingly sensitive to allergens, and has a great deal of phlegm - needs suctioning regularly. i'm wondering if anybody here has experienced 15 to 20 years of dealing with a laryngectomy, and if so, what kinds of challenges have arisen. i am going to try to get dad signed up on your website so he can communicate with you all - i think that would be really helpful to him - on an emotional level as well as educational level. my dad is a very brave, patient guy - with a great sense of humor. he's never complained or sulked about his losses. he's been a great inspiration to all of us in the family. i'd like for him to be able to share some of that with others. thanks for your help and for YOUR courage.

Hi Mary, My husband is a laryngectomee we are new to this he just became one 12-3-04. He also has to have his suction machine by his side at all times. He is only 55 and it has been realy rough on him. He is going to see another specialist on Monday and is going to try Hyperbaric oxygen chamber treatment as he is not healing from his surgery due to the damage of radiation treatment. Tell your dad to post him a note it may help both of them.

hello terry. i'll be seeing dad tomorrow and try to get him set up on this site. i imagine both you and your husband are feeling pretty shell-shocked. i hope you can both just hang in and try to ride it out. the surgery and the radiation must be quite a lot for even a very healthy body to tolerate, but i'm hping with you and for you both that things ease up and healing begins. thanks for taking the time to reply to me. take it easy....
