Hi All!
My dentist has said that I need 2 crowns, and if I don't my teeth are going to rot and I will need extractions. The first one is on a tooth that had a root canal. I'm not sure how crowns are done, but can't remember if its dangerous for me to have done or not. I had the usual dose of RT at the beginning of the year and have reduced saliva etc. Like everyone else here, my biggest fear is developing ORN, which doesn't seem to be as rare as we are lead to believe. Thanks for any input on this. Vicky x |

Hello Vicky
The risk of ORN is only present in bone that has directly been exposed to the irradiation. The decay in all the teeth in the mouth occurs as a result of the irradiation that affects the major saliva glands causing the dry mouth (xerostomia). So some decayed teeth will be siting in exposed bone and others not. The risk of ORN from extraction of a decayed tooth depends on this. A root canal treated tooth can be crowned; the core on which the crown is fixed might require reinforcemnt with a post placed in the root canal. Hope that explanation helps. Hi Dr Joshi
I'm afraid that wasn't totally clear for me. Is there any risk of ORN from having a crown fitted? Thanks Vicky |

Hello Vicky
100% no risk if the bone in which the tooth being crowned sits was not irradiated. 99% no risk if the root canal treatment in the tooth (even if in an irradiated site) has been successful. Vicky,
I had 6 weeks chemo/radio 2010 for base of tongue/tonsil. Came out of it with severe dry mouth etc. I cured the Dry Mouth by visiting the guy in the US who created the protocol that can reverse/relief it to stimulate saliva. This pleased my dentist because it means I have now restored my ability of good quality hygiene which is essential for post radio/chemo patients. This dentist was also recently trained by The Colonel in Maryland USA inthe protocol and can practice here in the UK on behalf of the Dry Mouth Foundation. Trust me it can work. Good luck you can read about the Colonel on his website www.n5ev.com or my website which I set up after being successfully treated on www.drymouthfoundation.org. |
