Pain in Throat When Swallowing-- Is this Cancer?

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the group. I am very concerned because for 2-3 weeks so far, I"""ve been having this continuous pain in my lower throat whenever I swallow.

I'ts not a typical sore/scratchy throat. I have no other symptoms- no lumps , no hoarse voice-- and no cold symptoms either.

I do have the typical runny nose in the morning from Fall allergies, but that only lasts for a few hours in the morning.

I have a day off from work next Friday- so I plan on making an appointment for a throat exam.

I don't nor have ever smoked, or hang around 2nd hand smoke, I dont chew tobacco nor drink alcohol.

However, I have gargled with mouthwash/peroxide for a few days weeks ago- and I've heard that the alcohol in mouthwash can bring on throat cancer.

When someone has soreness in thier throat when swallowing for over a week-- with no cold symptoms, does that mean odds are its cancer?

Hello Lilaug

The alcohol in mouthwash link with mouth cancer is not established. Anyway, the short duration of use with the peroxide mouthwash will not have caused a cancer!

You are doing the right thing in getting your throat investigated. Let us know how you get on.

Best wishes
Vinod :coffee:

Thanks so much for your reply , Dr. Vinod :-)

I will let you all know what they find.

Until then, I am drinking only Herbal and Green Tea and water (Was always a tea-totaller anyway) and after I'm through drinking Green Tea, I suck on the green tea bag, hoping to get all the anti-oxidants I can soaked in my throat.

Also, I've started sucking on a Vitamin C tablets, Slowly chewing and digesting red grapes, and snacking on tomatoes.

No soda, no artificial sweetners, and no sugar, with all fruits and vegetables carefully washed from possible instecticides.

I hope that if I have anything malignant in my throat, that I can go through the least amount of medical Hell I can possibly go through with Chemo and radiation.

I'll keep you all posted,
God Bless

Thank you Vicki, for your kind post also :-)

Everything seems to be okay with my throat now. It started as pain in swallowing, then turned into a 'post nasal drip""" type cold. My hayfever didnt help much.

Well, gradually, the swallowing pain left, to the point that I hardly feel any pain there. Especially after I ate some unsweetened yogurt.

Anymore now, I drink a cup of green tea each morning-- with two green tea bags. I then suck on the bags like coughdrops after I'm done drinking the tea. No soda for me either--

I find that immediately after eating unsweetened yogurt, that any remaining pain i have leaves for a few hours. I mix some Splenda with some vanilla extract in the plain yogurt. It's sooooo much tastier than the pre-sweetened yogurts.

Heck, I'm even smearing the yogurt on my face as a facial mask for about 20 minutes to see what beauty results I get.

I want to thank you again, Dr., and Vicki for your kind responses to my post. My prayers go out to everyone here concerned that they may have throat or mouth cancer.

If yoghurt gives you such relief it might be some oral thrush lower down the tubes.
When I have oral thrush the immediate effect of yoghurt gives as much relief as some topical thrush medicines.

It's really fascinating how different kinds of yoghurt have such varying effects. I never buy the low fat ones, obviously. But equally I find the big fatty lush Greek ones are a bit heavy for mixing unless I can find a sheep one. At the moment my throat seems to favour the Onken mango and vanilla which comes in a glass jar.
Years ago, pre-cancer, I used to make my own yoghurt and used it everywhere, girls! But I've lost my thermometer and it was a bit fiddly and curdled if you got it wrong.
By the way Vicki, how is the speech therapy going? Remember to do lots of humming on one key. That is a great exercise and you can pretend tpo be a contemplative Buddhist if anyone catches you!
Regards Ishbel

It may very well have been Oral Thrush!

I think my body's ph balance tends to go out of wack every month at both ends of my body during Menstruation...grrrrr.

I've been reading on ways to help it- like apple cidar vinegar in my tea each night, and taking Colon Cleanse tablets after menstruation is over.

Yogurt has been a big help with that. As well as finding things to replace refined flour and sugar in my diet.

I also felt to throw three cloves in my tea with the apple-cidar vinegar-- and I chew on the cloves after I finish my tea. Seems to have a very soothing effect as well.
