Hello Dr Joshi,
I wonder if there is any cause to be alarmed about a sharp stabbing earache which I have on waking up in the morning, at the same time as I clear the thick mucus which has gathered in my throat overnight.
It recurs occasi9nally throughout the day but is never bad enough to nwarrant a pai8nkiller. It isjust that when I was going through a pharyngeal site, earache was mentioned. It is always in the left ear and seems rto come right from the middle.
I wondere if it might have something to do with the constant infection I have in my sinuses. Or could it be the atmospheric high pressure which is remarkable at the moment?
Thanks Ishbel

Hi Ishbel

There are many causes for earache! It is best to see an ENT specialist who specialises in Head and Neck cancer surgery for investigation or explanation.

Having said that, I do see many patients who complain of long standing ear and jaw pain despite having had their ears and sinuses checked out to be normal. The pain is often found to be a muscle pain caused by excessive subconscious activity like clenching, sleeping lying onto the side of their jaw/ear. Try keeping your teeth apart and jaw relaxed all the time. Avoid any jaw activity over and above normal eating and talking. Try it and I hope that helps.

Best wishes
