Small Lump In Mouth - Picture and Details

Hi there,

Recently I noticed a small, blood blister like lump on the floor of my
mouth, under the tongue. The lump is fairly small, maybe 1/16th of an
inch in diameter. I've made an appt with my dentist to check it out,
but can't get in for another 4 weeks.

I was able to take a picture of it, and was wondering if someone might
be able to check it out for their opinion.

Any comments/help greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

James.

Hello James and welcome to the site. Dr Vinod usually comments on medical matters so we'll have to wait until he returns. Four weeks seems a very long time to wait to see a dentist - can you see your doctor meantime? It's always best to get things checked out by a professional - it might be difficult to diagnose from a photograph. Sorry not to be much help but keep us posted as to how you get on. Regards B x

Hello James

It doesn't appear to be a mouth cancer. It could be a bruised papilla at the orifice of the left submandibular gland duct or a hyperplastic, reactive oral tonsil (but I have not seen one before!). See Normal Findings and Structures Mistaken for Disease:
quote:
In the anterior portion on each side are the sublingual plicae or carunculae, slightly raised, cylindrical structures running from the midline to each side and housing openings of the sublingual glands (Fig. 1.49). At the most anterior portion of each is a more raised nodule with an opening to the submandibular gland (Wharton’s duct). The submandibular gland can be milked to see a less clear but not milky solution expressed from the duct. A stone in the duct can prevent the saliva from exiting. If the patient is edentulous and the mandible is greatly resorbed, then the floor of the mouth can appear dome-shaped as a tumor-like mass rising above the mandible and mimicking disease (Fig 1.50). Sometimes, hyperplastic, reactive oral tonsillar tissue may be noted in the floor of the mouth (Fig. 1.51). These may be associated with lymphoepithelial cysts or pseudocysts of tonsillar tissue.
Let us know what your dentist says.

Best wishes
Vinod Coffee

Hi Dr. Vinod,

Thanks for the reply. Greatly appreciated.

I don't think my Dentist will have a chance to check it out ... thankfully. As of today it's almost completely disappeared. I guess a little paranoia had kicked in here. :-(
