Osteiradporosis (I am sorry probally spelt it wrong My Dentist tells me I have a 90% chance of getting it when they take out my rotten teeth. Is there anyone who has had this done? Can you tell me about it? Your worried Paul

Paul, Do you mean osteoporosis? If so, look up 'on-line medical dictionary' via google: <pathology> A reduction in the amount of bone mass, leading to fractures after minimal trauma. Whatever that means! Fridge

Hello Paul It is osteoradionecrosis. Hello Paul I have been busy, in London this morning for presentation. Didn't mean to ignore you! Chances are increased if the bone holding the teeth was exposed to greater radiation. So risk could vary according to area of radiation exposure the teeth lie in. Bottom line: no one can give a definite answer cos no one knows what has happened in the bone. So all precautions that can be taken should be taken, the evidence that this makes a great difference is unclear! Ask your consultant what he thinks is the general scenario for such cases. Hi Paul, Charing Cross informed me after the two ops that there was a risk of this; and they prefered to take out my molars,I would be very fed up and would ask them why they were so lax. I have been hunting on the web for a school friend who has M.S. and leg ulcers they will not heal an found this Manuka Honey from New Zealand try to have a look www.manukahoney.com as it is used for leg ulcers and dental cavities that will not heal; I realise the porosis isto do with the bone, but it may be of interest as a health aid. I will be thinking of you over the Xmas period, which I have never been very keen on, as it is a tough time for those who are not well off.

Paul & Garance, Hope you don't mind me butting in with my two cents worth on mouth guards. I was fitted with a mouth guard (kind of clear plastic) that I wore during every session. My teeth have not been a problem (knock wood) except to the extent my fillings and crowns created hot spots of radiation on the sides of my tongue, which seven months later are still a bit sore.
|
Hi Ron, thanks for butting in, don't forget her in England we have the NHS National Health Service; I am sure that you have private health care in the USA. Sometimes in England you get quite good care, but better to know your stuff; re medication etc How are yuou doing saliva wise?
|
Garance, My saliva gets better very gradually. I don't need water all the time to talk, and I can gradually eat more and more without water. How's yours?

When I had my treatments I too was fitted with a mouth piece one for the top and one for the bottom. Inside the mouth piece that fit tightly against my teeth I would put this stuff called Gel Cam, in there. This was to prevent the radiation from doing too much damage. I also used a mouthwash that the dentist perscribed to me. I would rinse my mouth out with this 4 times a day. It must have helped because I have not experienced all the problems my dear friend Paul is having. You know the mouth is such a sensitive area to begin with. You then add all of this and it is all but horrific to handle. You just won't ever know until you have felt this pain. Vicki Lynn
