I had 3 fillings done over a year ago on my upper right teeth. After I had lots of pain and sensitivity. I went to a new dentist who said its fine. And about 6 months ago I had a really good cleaning on my gums and a week later (on my upper right side) I got a sore that was open (we think it was a canker sore). It soon closed up but a little bump was left there. And it gets smaller then bigger all the time. About 2 weeks ago my right side of my face got swollen and I just felt alot of pressure. And I got the swelling to go down in my face but now there is (on the same right upper side) a soft swollen lump on my gums but way up (not by my teeth), Literally over the 3 teeth that I had the fillings in! When I push on it I just feel pressure to my cheek and to my teeth, and also when I push on my cheek I feel pressure to my teeth. What could this be? I just want it to go away. I made an apointment with a periodontist for tomorrow. Im just worried, and I am also 12 weeks pregnant so if its an infection I dont want it to harm the baby Frowner

Hello Christy

You could either have a periapical (dental) abscess or a periodontal (gum) abscess related to one or more of the treated teeth or other tooth in the area. Your periodontist should be able to diagnose the cause and advise on its management. There is no evidence that dental infections will affect your pregnancy (unborn baby). So, don't worry about that. Let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

Hi mx736

Have you been to the dentist recently? That would be the best, first step. It could be that you've broken the tooth and it's become infected, or that an abscess has developed.

Please let us know what happens.

Hello zeekeLT

It is not possible to make a diagnosis over the Internet. Please see your dentist for a diagnosis. Let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

Hi zeekeLT

Is there any way your dentist can work you in sooner, or send you to a different dentist in the same practice? A month is a long time to wait when you're scared and in pain.

Hi I have a lump on the outside of my upper right gum. It appeared after having toothache in the tooth next to it. I have seen my dentist about it and he thinks the tooth is dead after taking an xray. He has not given me anything to get rid of the lump but he does not seem too concerned (I have seen him twice for check ups with the lump still there). The lump has not altered in size but does sometime bleed when I brush my teeth. Sould I be worried or will the lump go when eventually the dead tooth will need to be removed.

Hey, EmiMimi, I'm Mimi!

Can you get someone to take a pic of the bony lump? Dr. Joshi might be able to reassure you that it's something very normal or may tell you to go to a doctor/dentist. No one can make an internet diagnosis and if anyone does, that person should be reported to the authorities.

Whether or not you don't want to get surgery or shots is beside the point - you want to live, no matter what. Is that right?

My ignorant guess? You're OK. Get to a doctor or dentist as soon as you can. There's no point in prolonging this. The sooner you get a diagnosis, the better your life will be.

Take care sweetie. I wish only good things for you.

The other Mimi

I am a 24 yr old female, i smoked cigarettes since i was 22 and now i have stopped. I have this lump in between my 2 front teeth on my gums,, it sticks out when i smile. I went to the dentist and he cleaned my teeth and prescribed me peridex mouth wash. He also told me not to get scared cuz its nothing. But its been 1 month now and the lump is still there, and there is no pus in there, it just wont go away and im scared that it is cancer. And its not painful, but its uncomfortable sometimes. And i have been flossing and using mouth wash and brushing more often than usual. any ideas on what it could be???

Hi Kammy

When you went to the dentist, did he x-ray the area? If not, that would be a good place to start. You might also want to ask him for a referral to a periodontist or oral surgeon.

You might also want to change to a soft toothbrush if you're not already using one--they work just as well as firmer ones, and they're less irritating.

Let us know how things turn out.

no he did not xray the area...he said going to the periodontist is just going to cost too much money...also my gums bleed at the slightest touch. i hope this peridex really helps...and also i dont have insurance right now..so it puts me in a bad place also

Hello-I discovered swelling about an inch above the base/gumline of a previously damaged front tooth that ultimately had root canal about 5 yrs. ago. I set an appt. /w dentist yesterday, because I was concerned about new abcess/infection. Other info. is that I had had little sleep and am pretty sure I did clench leading up to this discovery. After setting the appt. I remember the last time I saw my dentist, I mentioned numbness & he said something about some nerve stuff above or around teeth that can become sore. The only difference is the new swelling. Could swelling of this kind arise from excessive clenching of this sort? I apologize, as I was registering I noticed this is a cancer support site, but the stream was very close to my sit. in some regards. Best to all.
