A few days ago I noticed a sight irritation on the left side of my tongue but just ignored it as I have felt that sensation before. Yesterday I looked in my mouth with a light and noticed a white bump (looks just like a pimple with a big white head)on the side of my tongue near the back molars. As I do not put things off, I called my dentist and he took me in right after I called (cancellation lucky for me). He examined the bump and didn't know exactly what to call it. He said it could of been caused by a puncture from something I ate or a reacation to some fillings I had done a few weeks ago..Just didn't know but didn't think it resembaled the typical signs for cancer. He told me to come back in a week for follow-up and if it's still there will send me to an Oral Surgeon? Should I be worried? I had a Uncle that died from tongue cancer and it all originated with a pimple.

Oh yes...He didn't feel the need for any medications but told me to rinse my mouth a few times a day with warm salt water.

Hello beatlelover

Do as you dentist advises. See him again and if he is unsure he will refer you for a second opinion even if it is not a cancer. Tongue cancer is not inherited. Let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

I have something that sounds VERY similar...did you ever figure out what this was? I've been searching the web and have found little to no information except for your post. Any info you could give would be much appreciated.

The big message here is go to your dentist.Dentists are the first port of call for any problems in the mouth. They are highly trained and should carry out a full screening test for oral cancer. If they are unsure, the rule of thumb is anything untoward that has been present for more than two weeks should be referred for further investigation. If you google "Mouth Cancer Awareness Week" it will take you to the British Dental Association web site where you can read more about oral screening and the early detection of Mouth Cancer
