Lump on hard palate

Hi there!

Today I suddenly noticed a small lump about 1cm from my right molers on my hard palate. It is reasonably painful when my tongue presses (with force) against it. It is difficult for me to see the colour of it. Should I see a medical professional about it, or wait out and see what happens with it.

Just as an afterthought, I first noticed it after eating a seafood pasta. Can this be a quasi-allergic reaction (I've never been allergic to seafood) ?

Thanks!

Hello Erike

It is difficult to know what it may be that you are describing. There is a bump of extra bone called a torus that is normally present in the midline of the hard palate, it may be minimal or very enlarged. For more information and pictures of normal appearances, please see Fig. 1.24 and Fig. 1.25 in this article called Examination Technique with Normal Findings and Structures Mistaken for Disease. You might also have explored the pterygoid hamulus or the hamular process of the pterygoid bone.

So, it could just be a normal structure that you have just noticed recently. Let us hope so. If you are worried, do go and see your dentist for an opinion.

Best wishes

Thanks for the reply!

It is defintely not the bone that goed down the middle of the hard palate. So I will most defnitely make an appointment with a dentist ASAP.
