Ensure makes me cough badlyGo ![]() | New ![]() | Find ![]() | Notify ![]() | Tools ![]() | Reply ![]()
Hello friends. I am going through quite a difficult eating time at the moment and am having more Ensure Plus thsn I usually do to try to keep some weight on. Trouble is that it seems to catch on the back of my throat although I sup it slowly and gives me a really bad coughing fit. So much so that I thejn have to spit out a lot of the Ensure and back to square one. I lost two cartons this way today. I wonder if it could be that it is too rich and condensed to have when I get up first thing. But then cold water makes me cough too. I am fine with warm water, sugared a little but there isd no nutrition in that. Thankfully I managed a Tesco syrup sponge covered with Channel Islands pouring cream which is lovely. Your comments much appreciated. My morale is very low--ununusual for me--with the eating problems. I can now see how people just give up and stop trying to eat. God forgive me for thyat self-pity. Hi Ishbel Am sorry to hear you are having problems keeping things down. I know nothing at all about the Esure you are taking but am wondering if maybe you could dilute it a little with warm sugary water, or even better that lovely channel island cream to make it go down easier?? The man in the next bed to my brother at hospital is feeding through a tube in nose, he has these little containers of something, its made by nestle, because he is not eating anything orally I would think they are cram packed with vitamins and calories, they come in different flavours and although he cant taste them he asked us yesterday to smell the coffee one to see if it really was coffee flavoured, when i visit later I will try and find out what they are, maybe they would be good for you till things are a bit easier and you could take them orally rather then through tube like he does. If I am talking yak yak, and they not suitable sorry in advance, just wanna help if i can.. huggsss Michelle xxx

Ishbel when my eating is bad I always go back to the old comforters that worked when little else did. Extra milk added rice pudding, biscuits dipped in tea. I like rich tea biscuits butterd to add calories and then softened in the tea. I think adding cream to things does maintain weight. Hope you pick up soon. It is annoying that we go off our food. For days we may think everything is almost normal again and wham food tastes of nothing that can interest you enough to be bothered. I have had afew weeks like this myself and seem to be living of biscuits. I know this is not good diet wise, but it is food. By about 9 pm if I realise I have not eaten much that day I have about 4 buttered biscuits just so I don't get night hunger pangs. Have you tried those Mint Chocolate Matchsticks dipped in tea. Marshmallows also go down ok. I know they are not nutritionally great but these days I just think eat something and maybe other things will improve. I have become very fonf of blueberries as they are so bland and inoffenisve.

Thank you Michelle and Pauline for suggestions. I take them on board! Was cheered up a bit today when I went to see an old girlfriend, GP turned psychiatrist, and was telling her how tjis flaming Ensure came back down through my nose. 'Nothing unusual about that' she said in her no-nonsense, Miss Jean Brodie, Edinburgh fashion. 'I used to boost my pocket money at school by showing people how to squirt out the ghastly school soup out through their nostrils!' She then proceeded to use ME as a sort of psychiatrist, sounding off about problems with the NHS closures, and suicidal patients, and anorexics, knowing that as I didn't know the people concerned she wasn't breaking any confidentiality code and could let off steam. Well it left me feeling really depressed at hearing all this misery and was glad to get back home to Sally-dog and dunked ginger nuts. Pauline I couldn't stand the buttery tea! But I'll get some of thyese minty matches tomorrow. Anything with a bit of flavour. Ishbel. Hope your brother has a restful night, Michelle.
