Jaw Muscle tightness post Radiotherapy

Hello All
I was told I would have this problem due to radiotherapy treatment. My jaw muscles would become really tight and restrict movement. I have got an exercise sheet and I carry out the exercises.

I was wondering has anyone else had the problem and how long before it starts to realise if at all?

On the road to recovery after being tortured by Radiotherapy!

Thanks
Rolf

Hello Rolf

You will find this link on Trismus useful. Several of my patients use the Therabite. Do read our past discussions involving Therabite. Hope that helps.

Best wishes

Thanks Doc
Interesting reading. I shall badger my consultant with this option (Don’t Worry won’t tell him I got it from this site)
Thanks Again

Thanks Dr Joshi, interesting link, just wish I'd got sight of it last November when I finished R/T.

Mouth opening currently is only 2 fingures, so I'll have a word with my consultant when I see him in a couple of weeks. Now that I'm into a wider range of food the restricted opening is becoming more of a nuisance.

Hi Rolf-
I had this as a reaction to my surgery, and now radiation has made it worse. I can get about 1 finger now(down from 1.5 before radiation)
The therabite works though, after using it for a few weeks you should be able to gain about 1 mm per week of mouth opening. You have to keep using it forever though, at least a little bit every day. It's kind of expensive but so much nicer than trying to stuff a bunch of tongue depressors in your mouth.
