hi everyone - I'm after some advice pls. my mum was diagnosed with mouth cancer a few months ago, had just over half her tongue removed & also a neck dissection. Cancer was found in 2 of her lymph nodes so she is now 1 week into a 5 week course of radiotherapy. she has had a PEG fitted as she could no longer eat & has now totally lost the ability to speak.

reason for posting on here is that she is v.v.v. low - won't do anything or see anyone (inc. me, my brother & her grandchildren). the hospital put her on antidepressants a couple of weeks ago but they aren't making any difference. it's as if she has totally given up.

has anyone got any ideas on ANYTHING practical that I can do to help her? I feel so useless ...

thanks in advance

Hi Chaffinch

Have you discussed this with her doctors?

Is there a support group at the hospital where your mom is being treated? It might help her to meet other people in her same situation.

Remember, your whole family has just gone through a very trying time, and everyone handles stresses in their own way. The main thing I can suggest is don't give up. These are still early days.

If she's not able or willing to talk, encourage her to write.

I'm hoping for the best for you.

Julia
