Hello
This past weekend I noticed a lump on the roof of my mouth that I'm sure is fairly new. It is quite smooth, and feels like a small ball bearing is underneath the skin. It is not discolored or painful. I'm 26, smoke every now and then but wouldn't consider myself a smoker and do drink a little. I've been worrying myself silly over this and am finding it hard to sleep at nights. I intend to get it seen to if it persists over the next fortnight or so. My girlfriend thinks it has got smaller over the past few days - would a tumour shrink in this way and is it possible to get cysts on the roof of the mouth? Any help is very much appreciated. Thank you in advance. Sam |

good afternoon "new member" (emp1_99)
Firstly I'm sure Dr. Joshi will come back to you in the short term,he will not be able to offer a diagnosis online(I don't think you would expect him to)but it is quite likely he will suggest you see your doctor or dentist in the short term rather than wait any length of time to see what happens. The normal recomendation is to seek advice if an abnormality in the mouth persists for between two and three weeks, but no one would criticise you for going a little early to get rid of the worry. The chances are the lump is not a tumour (mine was)but whether it is or it isn't, it needs seeing to, and the sooner the better. You have to make the first move.I am rather surprised that no one has come back to you before now, sorry you had to wait 48 hours. So my friend pop along and get this problem seen to then post a message saying how you got on. Keep Smiling John This message has been edited. Last edited by: John Spencer, |

Hi
Sorry, I missed your post. It is difficult to know what it may be that you are describing. There is a bump of extra bone called a torus that is normally present in the midline of the hard palate, it may be minimal or very enlarged. For more information and pictures of normal appearances, please see Fig. 1.24 and Fig. 1.25 in this article called Examination Technique with Normal Findings and Structures Mistaken for Disease. So, it could just be a normal structure, you have just noticed recently. Let us hope so. If you are worried, do go and see your dentist for an opinion.
