Hello everyone--I'm hoping someone can help me. A couple of weeks ago, I noticed something different in the area underneath my tongue. At first, I thought that I'd irritated or something while eating so I just ignorned it. Then, finally, last night I looked at it. It appears to be a blister--it's sort of clear looking--not unlike a blister that is ready to be popped. It's on the right side. It doesn't hurt or anything. I am not a smoker--never have been. I am a female in my early 40's.
Any ideas??? |

Hello Renae
This is most likely a mucus-retention cyst (or mucocoele). Scattered throughout the mucus membranes of the nose, mouth and throat are thousands of """minor salivary glands that transmit their """product""" through even tinier straw-like conduits (called ducts), dumping their contents into the mouth, throat or nasal cavities. If a duct becomes obstructed, saliva can dilate it like a water balloon except that this is saliva, so, this cyst feels firmer than a water balloon. It looks bluish. Obviously, the only way to know for certain is for you to be evaluated by an dentist or maxillofacial surgeon and for the mass to be biopsied. You would be best served by getting it seen to. Other than the option of biopsy, you might be advised to simply """observe""" the lump with regular visits to the dentist/doctor on a regular basis, returning sooner should the lump change significantly. Best wishes Vinod :coffee: Disclaimer: Please see your own dentist/doctor for a proper diagnosis as my words should not, in any circumstances, be taken as dental/medical advice.
