I have had a swollen tongue for about two weeks now. It swelled up about a month ago and went away, then came back and has continued. I have teeth imprints from the swelling. Now have small white bump on outside edge of my tongue. Went to family doctor and he trated me with antihistime for allergies, but that has done nothing. They also did blood and urine test. Nothing stood out in that. Had a dental exam recently, with nothing abnormal. I am worried it could be cancerous. I have an appointment with an ENT doctor next week. Any similar experiences or thoughts?

Hi Shooter
So far, you're doing the right thing: seeing a doctor about the problem and following up with a different doctor since the first one did not help. It's hard to say from here whether it's cancer or not, but you're being proactive. Remember to take the following with you to the ENT appointment: a list of your symptoms, a list of questions you might have, any medications you're taking, and someone to take notes in case you forget anything. I hope that everything turns out well for you. Please keep us posted. I've found that the folks on this site are phenomenally helpful. Julia Howdilly doodilly, survivorinos! |

hello there.I'm really pleased you are getting this seen to at ENT.I too had a very sore tongue for what seemed like years.I went to the dentist, doctors etc who put it down to stress, biting my tongue as I also had bite imprints. This went on and on until I demanded to see someone at ENT.Unfortunately as I was not is the 'right' group, don't smoke, don't drink, not over 50,eat healthy, reasonably fit, I was again fobbed off. After another 2 months in pain I went back to ENT and asked for a biopsy. This was done without any urgency....2 weeks later I was rushed to Liverpool with cancer of the tongue!!!! Now part of my tongue has been removed,I had a neck dissection and intense radiotherapy. If only someone had listened to my fears and acted straight away I might not be where I am today. I am not trying to frighten you or anything I just want to say DON'T BE FOBBED OFF. Fingers crossed it'll be nothing, thinking of you.

hi shooter
My sister had the exact same symptoms as you a few years ago. Like you she went to the doctors, the doctor sent her to the hospital eventually. she had all sorts of tests that took months. They said she had an allergy but didn't no what she was allergic to. They refurred her to an allergy clinic BUT! there was a 6 month waiting list. She really thought she would be dead by then as you can emagine i'm sure. Some days she thought she would choke on her tongue but no one seemed bothered. So she decided to go private. I have'nt a clue how much it cost but it was well worth it in the end. She got an appointment with in a week, they dobbed all sorts of things on her arms and in no time at all said she was allergic to asprin. Well we see an asprin as a head ache tablet but apparently its a natural substance conatained in certain food like lettuce of all things. And to think she was eating healthly was actually making her ill. |
