Swelling Under Tongue

Hi

My daughter is very worried, she has developed a swelling under her tongue. It appears larger at times, but she says it feels very big in her mouth,.There is no discolouring, and seems to be inside her tongue ( if you know what I mean)
I have made an appointment with our GP, but won't be until the end of the week. She is worried sick. She is a social smoker only smoking at the weekends, she is 18, and in generally good health. Could this be cancerous, I know that is what she is thinking

Hello Jenn

It is unlikely to be a cancer but it could be a blocked salivary gland that swells up periodically and then discharges or other. It is a good excuse to stop smoking though. Your doctor might refer her to an oral & maxillofacial surgeon at the local hospital. Do let us know how she gets on.

Best wishes

Does a blocked salivary gland under the tongue ,blocked for six weeks or more ever just pop or go away, is there any problems with just leaving it alone or should you watch for size change or anything else or just leave it, I'm not one to want to have surgery, what's recovery time? what's involved

Hello elaine

Sometimes they do. but if it increases in size or discomfort you will need to do something about it. Please speak to your oral maxillofacial surgeon about it.

Best wishes
