White spot and extremely sore lymph node

Hi there~

I went to the urgent care on Thursday (today is Monday) for a bad cough, swollen and extremely sore lymph nodes, and a sore neck. They said that I had bronchitis and that my throat didn't even look red. Told the doctor that my throat wasn't hurting. I was prescribed the Zpak and started it right away.

The very next day, my throat started to get sore and quickly progressed into barely being able to swallow (due to the pain, not tightening). I called the nurse help-line on Saturday, and she suggested that I go back to the urgent care because the antibiotics were not helping this new symptom. My husband looked at my tonsils and noted a white spot.

When I went to a different urgent care (the one I went to was closed), they were very dismissive and told me to let the antibiotics do its job. I pressed the issue and per my request did a strep test which was negative.

It is now Monday and my right lymph node is still very sore - it's so large that it is visible by just looking at my neck and I can still barely swallow.

All that long background for any suggestions that you might have.

Thanks!

I think you are doing the right thing by going back to see the medics.

I had yellow spots (tonsillitis) earlier this year, which the antibiotics didn't get and it turned into a quinsy (peritonsillar absess) which wasn't very nice at all.

Sore throats though, can be cause by virus or bugs.

Hello Crankette

You most likely are just having a bad throat infection related to your cold. It takes time to get better. Try the advice from WebMD given here. Hope it helps.

Let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

Thanks Doctor!

I ended up going to the ER 2 nights ago because I spiked a fever of 103.5 and couldn't get it to come down. They ran tests for strep and mono - They were convinced it was one of the two but both came back negative. Both doctors had no idea what was going on with my throat. They said that both tonsils were covered in white puss and one of the nastiest they've seen (nice, eh?).

They are treating me with a very strong anti-biotic, a steroid, and a pain med in hopes that they will take care of it.

Thanks for your response and your concern!

Good grief, Crankette!

Be sure to let us know what happens. I hate these mystery illnesses.

Best of luck to you,

Mimi
