Picture of Getting worried
Posted
I am femail aged 30, I do not smoke or drink. In the last week I have noticed a sore patch on the roof of my mouth. It appeared suddenly and is about 1cm across. I have looked in the mirror and it look redder than the area around it. It didn't appear slowly over a period of time and get bigger it just suddenly appeared, but it doesn't seem to be getting any less sore. I don't think that I have burnt my mouth or eaten anything to irritate it, but I suppose it is possible.

What do you think? Does it sound like anything serious?

I am a real worrier and this is making me very anxious. Please help as I am worried sick about this, I am hoping that it is just an irritated patch.

Thanks

Hi Getting Worried Confused

A mouth cancer doesn't appear overnight as a red sore patch, especially in the roof of mouth!

It is probably just a result of trauma (hard food) or a burn. Only get worried if it doesn't get better after 3 weeks. - then see your dentist or doctor.

Hope that allays your fears. Have a good weekend Smiler . Let us know how it turns out.

Best wishes

Thank you doctor for your reply, I feel much better than earlier today.

It really did seem to appear suddenly, it is more sore by the end of the day, I assume because eating is irritating it.

I am worried that you say I should worry if it is still there in 3 weeks time as it doesn't feel any bett than when I first noticed it, if it is, does it mean that it is cancer?

I am sorry to bombard you, it's just that I know I will be checking everyday to see if it is any better and if it isn't I'll probably go into hyperdrive!!

Thank you for any help you can give me on this.

Hi

Most traumatic ulcers heal within 14 days, so they should be healed by 3 weeks. It doesn't mean that any ulcer not healed by then is a cancer! Only that you should get it seen to.

Best wishes

Thanks doctor for your reply.

The sore area is less sore today, but is still red.

I have done some investigation and have read that cancer of the hard palete in the UK is uncommon. Although I suppose this means that it does happen sometimes, this is reassuring. Is it true?

Thanks again.
