thick phlegm mucus after radiotherapy

my 82 year old husband is undergoing radiotherpy twice daily for cancer of the epiglottis, apart from the usual side effects very sore throat and tiredness,he is also experiencing a thick phlegm mucus like substance which he has to keep clearing from the back of his throat, I would like to know if this is a normal side effect
