I am 30 years old and am very worried about the possilbility of mouth cancer.

For the last 2 weeks or so I have had a small painless ulcer on my tongue. I very often get mouth ulcers, but never one that hasn't gone away. It is the size of a pin head, so very small and almost at the tip of my tongue. Sort of like a nodule.

Then about this time last week I started to get the sensation that there is something at the back of my tongue that I can not get rid of. It feels like a hair. No amount of swallowing will remove it. I can't feel it all the time, but it is irritating.

I looked at the back of my throat with a small torch and can see nothing. The only thing of note is that my left tonsil has 2 small lumps on it. They are the same colour as my tonsil and look to be a part of it really. My husband says he has them aswell, so I am hoping that this is normal.

I intend to see my dentist as soon as I can, but will be unable for a couple of weeks, so I am looking for some reassurance that this sounds normal as I am very worried that it could be something serious.

I am female, do not smoke and drink only in moderation.

Please tell me I am worrying for nothing, before I am able to get to the dentist to get this checked out.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Worried!!

Hi Worried

You know yourself and your ulcers better than anyone else - this one bothers you, so take Paul's advice and see your doctor for a referral ( fast-track) to your local maxillofacial surgeons at your local hospital. They would rather see you early than have you ignore it. It may be nothing sinister but you will get peace of mind. Meanwhile be positive, but take action.

Best wishes
