Help! Use of Bicarb solution.Go ![]() | New ![]() | Find ![]() | Notify ![]() | Tools ![]() | Reply ![]()
I am a bit confused as having recommended that my Father uses the bicarb/salt solution to help with reducing the thick mucus( info found on this site), I have found a passage in the Marie Curie Cancer Care booklet that says " DO NOT USE a sodium bicarbonate rinse, which can cause problems with mouth, teeth and general health if you are very ill." Dad finished his radiotherapy 3 weeks ago and is on the mend, slowly, but I don't want to make matters worse by giving him the bicarb/salt rinse, but I think it is helping. Any advice? Vicki

Hello vjn The mouthwash will help loosen the stringy saliva and is quite dilute. Rinsing with a warm, dilute solution of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) or salt & bicarbonate every two hours will bathe the tissues and control oral acidity. Two teaspoons of bicarbonate (or one teaspoon of table salt plus one teaspoon of bicarbonate) per quart solution is recommended. Use the 'salt+bicarb' mouthwash often as it is soothing, counters the dryness and removes thick saliva. It will not cause a problem. Let others who have used it tell you so. Hope that helps.
