Hello everyone, I've currently quit dipping and gotten a good evaluation from my dentist. I'm 32 and have been a moderate to heavy dipper for 10 years. Will my risk of oral cancer ever go down and if so, when does it go down and how long should I continue to worry? Thank you all.

Joe

Good for you Joe,
Everyday you were dipping the risk increased, now the increase has stopped and everyday the risk declines a little to a point where you are at no greater risk than someone who has never indulged.Re your question as to how long you should worry, you might as well stop worrying now because worry will not make any difference other than to make you miserable.
Keep Smiling
John

Thank you John, I'm trying my best not to worry. I'm sure it will get easier over time if I don't run into anything. I just know I abused myself for a long time and I hope it doesn't catch up to me.

Hi Paul

I know you asked John; hope you don't mind if I answer.

Dipping is another term for using chewing tobacco. Some people actually consider it a safe alternative to smoking. The user puts a wad of ground/shredded tobacco into his (or her) mouth. Tiny lacerations in the skin result, and saliva mixes with the tobacco. That's about as far as I can describe it without getting a sick feeling. You can actually see videos of it on You Tube; just type dipping snuff (or tobacco, or Skoal) in the subject box.

A word of warning: these are decidedly not for the squeamish.

Julia
