Wednesday night i looked under tongue and found a small blue/black lump under my tongue on the floor of my mouth.
Five tears ago had a smllae white lump which turned out on biopsy to be an HPV pappiloma.
Saw my doctor who did not know what it was and said that NICE guidleines sugested 3 weeks before he could refer me for more tests.
If there is something nasty going on is it wise towait 3 weeks before biopsy. Will this 3 week wait cause me serious problems?
I seem to remeber being referred within7 days last time and the lomp then didnt look dark and nasty then
Please can someone assure me tht my GP is being reasonable making me wait this amount of time before investigation

Hi, Michael. I'm not sure what NICE guidelines are, but since you have already been diagnosed as having the HPV virus, and since HPV is a known cause of oral/throat cancer (as I know to my cost), i would go back and push for faster response (mind you, it's already been 10 days , sorry didn't see this before Frowner )

Can you get a 2nd opinion anywhere, go direct to a hospital, anything like that?

I personally hope it has gone away during the wait Smiler

Hello Michael

I have not known mouth cancers to present as blue/black lump. Your wishes to wait to see if it resolves as no sense in burdening the hospital with a non-cancer. NICE guidelines refer ulcers/mouth lesions not resolving in three weeks as being suspicious and advise referral. However, if it gets bigger while waiting, do go back and tell your doctor and he will probably arrange a fast track referral (seen within 2 weeks.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes

Well i went to my GP today after 3 weeks and he said he thought it was a cyst and to come back in 2 weeks after giving me antibiotics for pain in the floor of my mouth (not the lumpwhich is painless}that has spread to my cheek and my ear over the next 2 weeks.
maybe I have an infected mouth and I am worrying needlessly
i have no trust in my GP practice as every appointment you have is with another doctor.
Is a cyst something to worry about?
i went to my dentist with toothache two weeks ago and she said the lump looked harmless but her Xray of my painful teeth showed no infection or cause and told me to come back on 20/12/2012
Any useful advice from you experts would quite frankly help me more than my so called medical experts I have come accross over the last month

Hello Michael

Ask to see a specialist at the hospital and you will get a referral. The lump/cyst may or may not need removal but the specialist will probably remove it (biopsy) to confirm that it is nothing to worry about.

Best wishes
