Hi i have recently started to have some numbness in my cheeks and tongue. I am so concerned about it. I have two small red spots on my inside cheek. What do you suggest I do. I feel I am being really stupid to think it may be cancer. What do you think?

Hi mmpd

The two little red spots on the inner cheek could have been caused by inadvertent subconcious cheek biting. Are you clenching? The numbness in the tongue and cheek could be related to this too. Keep your teeth apart and see how you do.

If what you are complaining of doesn't go away by 3 weeks, or if you are still concerned, please see your dentist/doctor for an opinion.

Best wishes

I guess i am scared because i am a smoker of 8 years and i also have a white patch on my cheeck. The red spot is way too high by my teeth to have come from a bite. I have been known to clench my teeth though so I hope that is all it is. I am only 29, could cancer happen to me? Would it still be ok to check it out?

Hi mmpd

The additional information makes a difference! The smoking increases the risk. Please stop smoking :banghead: .

While mouth cancers have tended to occur in older people, there is an increasing incidence in younger people like you, so it could happen to anyone!

The white patch (leukoplakia) will need a biopsy - it is most times not cancerous. So don't worry needlessly, but be concerned enough to get a referral to an oral & maxillofacial surgeon for advice. Don't delay - it is better to get a proper diagnosis early - you will sleep better!

Let us hope all turns out well. Let us know how you get on.

Best wishes
