Hard Bump on Hard Palate

This morning I woke up with a painful hard bump on the roof of my mouth approximately 1/2 inch back and towards the center of my mouth from my right incisor. I know it is not part of my normal mouth "geography" as my retainer did not fit in my mouth because of it, and I wear this retainer regularly. It is somewhat tender to touch, and it does hurt and get irritated if I eat or try to poke at it with my tongue. As I said, it is very hard & turned up within the past 24 hours.

I managed to get a look at it using two mirrors and noticed a smaller, less swollen bump on the side opposite of this troublesome one. I confirmed the presence of what should be two small bumps as part of my normal palate by looking at the grooves in my retainer (which I've had for 5 years now).

There is also some swelling of the gum around my right incisor, but this has gone down considerably over the day.

I'm nervous that this is something that may be serious and am unsure what to do. Sorry for the long post!!!

Hi leabean89

Is there a crack or rough spot on your retainer that could have irritated the roof of your mouth?
You should have your dentist/orthodontist check out both your mouth and your retainer.

Thanks, Julia!

Today, the irritation has lessened a lot. I set up an appointment with my dentist, but he can't get me in until next Thursday! Hopefully all will be resolved by then.

I did some more looking and it seems like there is a very irritated hard blister type thing right next to one of the ridges on my hard palate.. I've been making sure not to bump it and keeping my mouth excessively clean, so I hope it heals on its own.

I still want to make sure it's nothing serious though. My appointment couldn't come sooner!
