Worried about wife

Question:
My wife recently underwent floor of the mouth cancer surgery twice in the last 7 weeks. In both lengthy operations the a flap from the chest was put in place to replace the removed tumor over the top of what remains of the lower jaw bone. In both cases the flap failed primarily caused I believe because of serious infection that set in after surgery.

I am assuming another flap attempt will not be undertaken, therefore, what are the options that exist at this point. I am also interested in the quality of life for the patient related to each options.

I am having difficulty obtaining such information from team of doctors so would appreciate any information you could provide me.

Thank you in advance.

Hello wildduck

Sorry that your wife had such bad luck. A successful flap would give a better quality of life, hence they tried twice. The two donor sites already used are compromised but there are other sites. It might be worth trying again, but speak to your local experts. You will find more information in this previous post about New Tongue Reconstruction Methods Help Patients with Mouth Cancer and Free Tissue Transfer, Osteocutaneous Radial Forearm Flap. Hope that helps.

Best wishes
