Do I have a fibroma growth?Go ![]() | New ![]() | Find ![]() | Notify ![]() | Tools ![]() | Reply ![]()
Hello all, One of the down sides of the internet is that it can make anyone feel helpless when they start researching things they do not understand. I am that person right now and I cannto figure out what is in my mouth. let me preface this by saying i plan on seeing an ENT this month, until work allows me to have that time off I need some sort of idea what is going on with me. I have a growth on my soft palate, after much research I have decided it must be one of a few things. based on photos i have seen I cannot find anything tha tlooks similar to it actaully growing on the soft palate. everything i find is always on the toungue, cheek, gums, or hard palate. But i assume they are all closely related so it may be possible that I have a fibroma growth there. It looks like all the pictures I have seen when I do a google image search for "fibroma", however it also looks like many other things like some of the HPV related growth (which I highly doubt i have based on my past). Let me explain it a bit.. It is a haphazard bulb, or polyp on a tiny little stalk, it sometimes sticks to te top of the soft palate and looks like a little wart or bulb of skin but generally it hangs down next to my uvula and causes no pain or discomfort. Recently I have been poking at it a bit and at that area in my mouth so i have made the back left of my mouth a bit sore from that so i need to stop poking around so much. I noticed this about a year ago but it made have been present longer, I am only 21 years old and based on what i have read many oral cancers don't occur at this age however ther eis a small percentage. based on what i have described what do you think it may be? An Oral Fibroma? It seems very flimsy and as I said before just hangs ther ein the back it is about 1 quarter the size of my uvula but I know it deserves some attention. Sorry for such a long post I hope i have no bored you. Any help is appreciated. PS: I have been to 2 dentists since I noticed this and neighter have mentioned it. PSS: I found this picture of a fibroma growth. My "thing that hangs down" looks like this EXCEPT it is on a tiny little stalk and is a bit more rough than it is round and perfect. here is the photo: http://www.entusa.com/oral_photographs/oral_fibroma_082001.JPG

Hi jamesT Your description and its long hisory suggests an ORAL SQUAMOUS PAPILLOMA. Its clinical features: Painless, exophytic granular to cauliflower-like lesions; can be found on palate; generally solitary; soft texture; white or same color as surrounding tissue; young adults and adults; common. Its cause: most due to papillomavirus; some unknown. Its treatment: excision. Its significance: lesion has no known malignant potential; recurrences rare Hope that helps. Hello Doctor, I appreciate your prompt reply I am truly greatful for your site. After reading my post just now I see how many spelling errors I made. I apologize for that it was very late. I wonder how I could have gotten SQUAMOUS PAPILLOMA if it is in direct relation to HPV. I guess I bit my fingernails alot maybe something got on my hands? I just thought HPV was an STD so it is hard to imagine that, I will ask my doctor. I will let you all know how it works out, maybe someone else will stumble apon this thread and be able to get some relief in just knowing what they may have in the future. This message has been edited. I went to an ENT today. I asked what it was he took look and within 10 second said "It is a "wart" basically" i said oh like a Papilloma, he said "yes exactly, we will cut it out". I asked how ii could of gotten it and he said oral sex but I have never done that, he said it was also possible that I got it through the air breathing in someone else's stuff I guess. What do you think Doctor? How else can yu get these besides what he said... PS: I feel like a new person having a normal soft palate again with a strange thing hanging down.

Hi jamesT That is good news. You will a lot more comfortable after the wart is removed. You have already said that you bit your fingernails alot and maybe something got on your hands. That is a good enough explanation, I would think!
