Hello again
The other day I noticed a white spot on my tongue - it was quite near the back and only noticable when I stuck my tongue out. The other night I looked again and realised that there are actually four spots there in sort of a diamond formation, it's just that the first one I noticed is a bit bigger. My tongue is a bit sore, but that may be because I have been brushing my tongue in an attempt to remove the spots. There is also a slight white coating on the tongue, but nothing major. I do have a cold at the moment, and I have recently finished a prescription of penicillin for tonsillitis, which I know can cause oral thrush. I also have asthma, for which I use a symbicort and salamol inhaler. However I am very concerned that it may be oral cancer or a pre-cancerous condition. I do already have an appointment to see my doctor on 7 January and will mention it then, but in the meantime I am constantly thinking about the spots! I should also point out that I am 23 year old female who doesn't smoke and who drinks occasionally. |

Good Morning Pythonette,
You vigilance is commendable and I would not try to dissuade you from this. We should, however, take one step back and look at this situation objectively. Yes, tongue cancer happens as many MCF members know only too well and early diagnosis is very important. On the other hand a twenty three year old non smoker is in a low risk category ....but by no means immune. There are a number of minor problems which manifest as lumps on the tongue, infection for example, as Doctor Joshi told you in November. Please think about the following:- 1)Trying to remove the lumps by brushing will not help at all in fact this action is more likely to make the problem worse. 2)When you saw the doctor to obtain the prescription for penicillin what did he have to say about the lump/s 3)Since you are obviously worried about your situation, Jan 7 is too long to wait for an appointment. Ring the surgery and ask for an earlier appointment or see your dentist, they spend all their lives peering into people's mouths and they are good at spotting problems. 4)Tomorrow is Christmas Eve so forget about this problem for a couple of days, enjoy yourself. 5)Do see your doctor/dentist and get to the bottom of this problem. Keep Smiling John |
