First of all hi!
secondly, the reason i am here is that this morning i woke up with a mild pain in my tongue and about half way through my day i realized that there was a slightly smaller than a pea sized bump inside my tongue on the left side close to the front. I can only feel the bump with my fingers and i can mainly feel it from the bottom of my tongue vs the top (if that makes sense) heres a pic of the affected area with an approximation of size of the lump in question. I am a 5 year smoker of ~1 pack a day and i drink (pretty heavily) about 3-4 times a month. So i know I am at risk. But any idea what it is? Everything i read about PAINFUL lumps referes to cancer :-/ im making a dentist apptment in the AM. Cheers. and thnx for any responses This message has been edited. Last edited by: mph, |

Hello mph
It doesn't look like a mouth cancer. Could be a swelling of blocked minor salivary gland or cyst. It might go away by itself and no one be the wiser! Let us know what your dentist says. I have the same problem with my tongue, in the same spot. The symptoms are similar, except my lump seems to be a bit bigger and I do not have a lot of pain--it does get sore from time to time. I am going to my doctor soon, but I am very scared. I am a non smoker and non drinker with no family history of cancer. What do you think I have? Is there anything I can do to try to make it go away on its own? It started as I was recovering from a sinus infection. Thank you so much for any advice, I have so far been unable to find reliable online information.

Hello Ashleigh
Mouth cancers are not that common so there is good chance it is not! So, relax. But please do see your doctor/dentist for a proper diagnosis and management plan. If it doesn't resolve or gets larger, etc, get an opinion from an oral & maxillofacial surgeon. Let us know how you get on.
