Palate Lump: What can it be other than Cancer!

Ive recently discoverd a small (circa 1cm) hard red lump in the centre of my palate. I think it may have been there for a couple of months. Though ive been made aware of it by a recent winter cold and sore throat. Im a 27 year old male / ex light smoker, in generally excellent health. At first I thought the lump might burst but on sticking pins in it (which didnt hurt) it appears solid and fibrous. There does not seem to be any associated pain.

Now on typing "red lump palate" into Google im instantly directed to lots of cancer sites. Though as with any medical problem there must be lots of things this could be without me continuing to have my private nervous breakdown! Although ive booked to see a dentist in a few days time it would be good to hear some ideas from people.

I have got some photos but am not sure how to attach them.

Thanks for any ideas.

Hello Howie

Have a look at Examination Technique with Normal Findings and Structures Mistaken for Disease. In the midline of the hard palate extra bone may be found (Fig. 1.25). Called a torus, it may be minimal or very enlarged. It will feel bony hard and will appear opaque on a radiograph confirming that it is composed of extra, but normal bone.

Let us know what your dentist says.

Best wishes
