Lump on inside of lip.....

Hi everyone,

Very worried here, I've had a lump on the inside of my lower lip on the right, it is the size of a pencil eraser it has been there for about five weeks the first few weeks when I squeezed it with my teeth I felt liquid coming out, it looked clear, but tasted salty, now it has closed and I can't seem to squeeze anything out of it, I think it has grown slightly bigger, but can't be sure some mornings I wake and think it feels smaller but by the middle to end of the day it has got bigger, it also has a white appearance and is hard, any ideas from anyone, especially doctors Worried would be gratefully appreciated, thank you.

Good Morning Elkiepops
I don't think any doctor or dentist would be willing to offer any form of diagnosis online, he/she will need to see the problem to have any real idea what it may be.You are obviously worried about it and since you came to this website you suspect it may be something sinister, the chances are it is not, but either way it needs attending to without any further delay. the longer you delay the more difficult it will be to correct and this is measured in days---yes really. You must make the first move and that is to see your dentist first thing monday morning,if you can't get an appointment see your doctor. Elkiepops don't let anything stand in the way of this monday appointment.Glasgow has produced some first class doctors, the consultant I see at Wakefield came from Clydebank.Post a message saying how you got on. By the way, where did the name Elkiepops come from?
Keep Smiling

Hi Elkiepops

You seem to be describing a mucous retention cyst. You will find more information about it in this previous post: here. You will need to see your dentist or doctor for a definitive diagnosis and referral to the local Maxillo-Facial department for treatment. It can become a nuisance.

Best wishes

Good for you Elkiepops,if everyone with mouth problems behaved in the same prompt and decisive manner as yourself they would save themselves an awfull lot of trouble. That first step, making the appointment, is non too easy is it?There are so many reasons why you should wait another week or two, but this approach only adds to the problems.good luck LK, let us know how you get on.

Yes getting an early appointment is a good idea. But if you are like most of us you may be prodding and playing with it a bit more than you should and making it worse. Try to forget about it between now and the appointment.

You are so right PaulineT, I can't leave it alone, the tongue has got a mind of its own! The Dr. I want to see has always got a waiting list about a week long, as he is very good, I could've seen any of the others by now, but wanted this particular Doc. Can't imagine what I'm going to do when he retires, which by my calculations might not be too long Yikes I have given the other Docs at the surgery a chance, but I'm never happy and always go to my favourite for a second opinion anyway, mad I know. Rambling again, now to the point, sorry about that, this thing on my lip, seems to have shrunk, but before that happened it went from a white colour to the same colour as the rest of my mouth. Dr Vinod K Joshi could you tell me if that is common occurrence for what I may have? Thanks.

Hi Elkiepops

No one has tried to explain it before but here's my Twocents explanation:
quote:
The whitish colour could be due to the overlying skin stretching and being 'hyperkeratinised' by your playing with it, like a callus on the hands of a farmer is caused by constant rubbing with a hoe. When deflated, the rubbbing ceases and normal colour returns.

Hope that helps!

Best wishes

Hi everyone,

Thanks for explanation Dr Vinod, I saw my Doctor today and he said exactly what Dr. Vinod said it was, a mucous retention cyst and has written a letter to the oral medicine department of the dental hospital, there is a waiting list though of about 16 - 18 weeks!, but I can live with that now it has been confirmed there is nothing sinister going on. So thank you all on this forum who replied, keep well, and fingers crossed for you whatever your problems, and huge thanks to Dr Vinod, keep up the good work, don't know how you find the time, but you are ace! Big Grin Bye... x x x

To all,

I have recently begun to faintly hear my pulse in my left ear. This started about 24 hours ago. There is no associated pain even when pressing below and around the ear.

Anything new happening to me these days makes me fearful. Any suggestions?

Regards, Fridge

Hi everyone elkiepops here, you may or not remember me, but I wrote to Dr Vinod in April of this year worried about a lump on my lower lip, just to let you all know I have been for my surgery this morning and the lady who performed it was sure it was a 'mucouscele', probably have not got the spelling right on that one, but you're all an intelligent bunch on here, I'm sure you'll work it out, I have to return to the dental hospital on the 14.9.05 for results and a checkup, so will let you know for definite if it was a harmless cyst. Yes miss pessimistic still has doubts, you know, but that's just me. Take care everyone. speak soon.

Hi Elkiepops

She said 'mucocele' also known as 'mucous retention cyst'. The biopsy should have removed it and the bother it caused. Keep well.

Best wishes
