I have what is apparently an abcessed tooth upper right, a sinus infection that probably turned into a throat infection and ect. Apparently my absessed tooth is messing around my teeth alignment.

I'm on amoxicillian, pariet, and mortin. Anyway today I felt a slight burning on the side of my tongue after eating salt and vinegar chips, i drank some water and noticed that there were some bumps on the side of my right tongue, I went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror:

To my horror my tongue was swollen on either side and underneath my tongue (on the sides) where the swelling was, were very very dark purplish veins, I called the hospital they said it was normal with antibiotics and infection anyway I didn't particularly trust this and my tongue felt uncomfortable so I decided to go into the hospital.

Went in Doctor looked at my tongue said it was normal, pretty sure the swelling went down a bit and the veins lost a bit of their darkness, doctor said it was a perfectly normal looking tongue and to change from amoxicillian to arithromisin if my tongue had swollen at all and because it was better to treat dental infection.

Left the hospital with a perscription, looked in the hospital mirror before I left, still looks swollen with dark veins on either side and bumps on the side of my tongue.

Doesn't seem so bad now, but had a fight with my family who thinks i'm some sort of anxiety nut because I choose to follow proper patient procedure: ie: go to the doctor when your tongue swells and becomes discolored for no reason.

Anyway I was wondering what could this possibly be? at first I thought it was black and didn't notice it was veins, that worried me a little; Is the tongue normally dark veins on the underneath (sides) I do normal tongue inspections but haven't noticed this before?

Could it possibly have just missed my notice? should I go to my competent Family Doctor tomorrow to evaluate things more seriously? This has been a huge strain on my gf and myself because of the insanity of my family, pushing these issues has become such a unplesant business that my mother seems to think i'm literally near insane.

*sigh*

Hi

Various causes for a burning sensation/soreness of the tongue. Likely cause in your case was eating crisps with sharp edges. Veins (carrying deoxgenated blood) look bluish-black under the tongue where they are quite superficial and visible. Get your abcess treated and stop freaking out or you will be scared worried Roll Eyes

Best wishes

The only thing which really worries me is if I see a problem and an inept doctor or dentist tells me there is nothing wrong.

Went to a better doctor today who clearly seen the swelling and told me what the cause/solution was. Yay.

I can see you are concerned but Dr. Joshi is right. Any antibiotic treatment will in any case take some time to work. If it doesn't then is the time to beocme more agitated. Give the current treament a chance.
Discolouration can happen with some mouthwashes if you over use them. I recall using one years ago and my tongue went blackish and my dentist asked what I had been using. The disclouration was caused he said by the mouthwash.

And FWIW we all wonder what if the first doctor I saw had spotted it sooner....

In normal situations I only get worried when I see a problem, ie: tongue burning, swelling, becoming red and bumpy on the sides and I go to the doctor incase it could be serious: ie: begining of an allergic reaction.

To have them look at my tongue and then tell me that my tongue is not swollen and that is the way my tongue normally looks, whether they say it aloud or not they act as if you're an anxiety patient, using anxiety as a scapegoat for their own gross incompetence.

I'm in a position where if I don't make an apointment for a small clinic or go into the walk in clinic that between the hours of like 7pm to 9am I can only see a doctor at a local hospital, the staff is grossly over-worked, have disgusting attitudes, try to treat people with condescension, and then get offended when I insult them with a vocabulary that they don't understand for treating me like i'm some massive hassle for showing up. (the other doctors are fine and quite a few nurses, but there are really bad apples)

I've went there while my girlfriends throat was swollen, she had problems breathing and she was breaking out in hives, for them to tell her she was taking an axiety attack, after she ate somthing that we know for a FACT that she's allergic too. Then when the doctor asks if she feels certain symptoms associated with anxiety and when she's told no, she completely ignores it.

Or does bullshit things like associate the time the patient comes in, with the problem ex: coming in the hospital at night the doctor said was a factor that clearly pointed at anxiety. When I went on to point out to her that they don't have a doctor working there during daylight hours, she wasn't even phased. I mean, she didn't even blink.

Doing things like saying that yellowing of eyes/hands wasn't even happening and that somthing must have been on the skin, while I watched it occur (to a friend)

So unless it was a good doctor working at the hospital (which is rather rare) theres usually one quack there who (if it was serious) would send me home to die. I've reported her severe malpractice time and time again to the hospital administration, I haven't seen her lately so hopefully she's gone for good.

What even enrages me more is when a doctor takes on a condescending tone with me to explain somthing that I previously told them I understood and they have the audacity to try to start an explanation in laymans terms, and they get offended at me when I would 'dare' to cut them off to explain it in proper medical and scientific terms.

Or when they use some bullshit analogy to explain somthing like "Similiar to a rubber band, when you stretch it and it snaps back, thats why you would get searing head pain"

If a doctor can't give an elucidation without reverting to pathetic nonsensical analogies, and then is unable to explain what is actually going on, then they should just keep their mouth shut and leave the explaining to someone who can explain the science of what is actually happening.

Just for the record this doesn't have anything to do with arrogance or me being rude to a doctor, these doctors I am talking about have displayed ineptitude to the level that its almost caused people their lives and nothing has been done even with reporting it to hospital administration because the area I am living in has an extreme shortage of medical staff.

My tone when I go into the doctors is civil and humane, but with these doctors that I am talking about they start in a condescending tone offering explanations that make no rational sense, ignoring critical information from a patient because they already have a preconcieved notion of what the problem is despite the evidence at hand, and go so far as to suggest that you have a mental condition of some sort.

At that time I usually explain to them how there diagnoses is incorrect and ill-concieved, or explain how I understand the current subject in scientific terms in a more thorough manner than they did, or elucidate how explaining a medical condition with a loose analogy shouldn't be a suitable explaination because it defines no actual mechanisms for what is actually happening. If I could avoid these doctors in the scant few instances i've ever gone for myself (usually its with a friend or family in an emergency situation) I would, but they are the only medical access I have during certain hours of the day, and to not follow proper medical procedure when I do can result in great harm. (theres always the chance that the specific doctors I am talking about are not on call during those hours)

When I speak about this to the competent doctors I do visit, they are near shocked and disgusted at the diagnoses the other doctor gave me, and at the way they treat patients.
