Hi there

I am a 29yr young female who has survived tongue cancer twice in 2 years. Just wondering if there are any other young adults out there who would like to chat with me about the whole difficult experience? I have had radiation treatment too & the after affects are quite horrible but I do my best to stay positive. I am scared that I will get sick again but it is difficult for me to talk to anybody about this as nobody really understands...& that sometimes is a very lonely feeling.

Hello Kelley and welcome to our site Smiler . I was 32 when I was first diagnosed with tongue cancer so yes I understand completely what you are talking about and what you have gone thru. It came back after 10 years, can you imagine :bomb: ! Hell I thought I was thru, done, finished. I thought that I would never ever never have to go thru that again. But it had different plans for me. I wish I would have known this, I would have done the things that I always wanted so badly to do, I thought I had time tho. I was only 42! That time it was worse tho. Then it came back again in 2003. This time is the worst! I am still recoperating from the surgery. You can read my story on the site. Vicki's story. So Kelley if you need to talk, scream, yell, vent, cry, that is what we are here for. Smiler .Lean on us. We have all been where you are at. I have also come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter if you are 22 or 62, this is horrible at any age. Frowner ..Always, Vicki

Hi Kelley. just to let you know that i'm thinking of you and the discomfort that you've had to put up with. I'm a young 45 musician/author. Had the radiotherapy thing for 6 weeks in may 2003 and still trying to get over it and come to terms with it. Still got dry mouth and still feel under the weather but battling on. It's a rotten illness and the support of others is so important as their is a feeling of isolation which non-sufferers can never really understand. As vikki Lyn said; you are not alone and if you ever want to e-mail me for support, or even useful tips then feel free. heathrowsteve@aol.com

Hello Kelley

Welcome. You might find Clare's post of interest. She was only 19 when she had her operation for a tongue cancer last year. She also posted in Grab your coffee, this may take a minute.

Best wishes
Vinod :coffee:

Hello Vicki

It was indeed you that started the topic, but I was trying to tell Kelley about Clare who also described her 'lonely feeling' and was looking for another young adult Wink to talk to.

Best wishes
Vinod Cool (trying not to be noticed)

Hi Dr Vinod

Thanks alot for your reply. I have left a message for Clare. I was shocked to discover her age as so far I have been my Doc's youngest tongue cancer patient. I would also like to share my story and pics, would you be interested in this? I am so glad that I have discovered this site as for the past 2.5 years I have had nobody besides myself to chat about this with!

Regards
Kelley

Hi again Dr Vinod

Just one other question...excuse me if I seem thick. What exactly does HPV stand for? I have heard of tongue cancer being linked with herpes before, is this what this stands for?

Thanks
Kelley

Hi Kelley

Have a look at Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). There are previous posts related to it. You can find them by doing a search for keyword: 'HPV' in the section 'Questions & Answers'.

Best wishes

Hi Kelley

My husband is 34 and was diagnosed in January (non smoker, non drinker) and had surgery and radiation.

It came back in July so now he is having chemo.

Feel free to contact me if you want to chat.

Stella, hello and welcome to RDOC. The first sign for me was a sore on the side of my tongue. It hurt like hell too. This sore was white at first. It was very very small. But you could not tell by how much it hurt! I went to the Dentist the very day. It did turn from white to whitw on the outside with a black center. This was how mine started and looked. I am sure there are others that may have started a different way. I have had three times now and all three times have been the same....I pray to GOD above that this is not what you have. Please keep us up to date on this.. ALways, Vicki Lynn
