lump high up on gum

hi,
about a week ago i discovered a pea sized lump high up on the left side of my upper gum. It is above where my gum meets my cheek so i can't actually see the lump, only feel it. It feels hard and smooth, and hasn't changed since i found it a week ago.
For a few weeks, maybe months, I have a had a sensation in my upper left teeth, which is hard to describe, it just didn't feel right. This makes me wonder how long the lump has been there.
I did go to see my dentist, who said at first that he wasn't convinced it was something dental, then said that there was a root filling nearby that had been redone 2 years ago and that he'd redo it again and clean it out. I'm not convinced that he actually felt the lump, as it is very hard to feel it with my mouth open, as my cheeks are too tight to the gum.
I am obvously thinking the worst, and the fact that the lump is so high makes me wonder if it is something to do with my teeth. Could you shed any light for me, and hopefully put my mind at rest?
thanks in advance.
Dave

Hi DaveH

Sometimes a bone reaction to a chronic irritation from a dead tooth causes a thickening of the bone over the area of the root tip. See my previous post on 'Condensing Osteitis'. It is unlikely to be a mouth cancer but do see your dentist again about it and let us know how it turns out.

Best wishes
