Biopsy results of squamous epthelial hyperplasia and chronic inflammationGo ![]() | New ![]() | Find ![]() | Notify ![]() | Tools ![]() | Reply ![]()
Hi, My husband chewed for 15 years and has since quit 6 months ago. He had a biopsy done on his cheek a month ago and the results came back showing benign squamous epthelial hyperplasia and chronic inflammation. The oral surgeon described it as inflammation and thickening. I was wandering if someone could better explain this diagnosis to me and is it something to be concerned about. For the last 6 months I have been so worried about oral cancer. I know I should feel better knowing that is was benign but I can't help myself to worry. Also what should the biopsy site look like one month prior to biopsy. I will try to post a photo, if you can let me know if this is normal I would appreciate it.Thanks. http://i1209.photobucket.com/a...ingery83/003-4-1.jpg

Hello worriedwife The biopsy showed "no cancer." However the tissue reacted to the tobacco chew and it got inflammed and thickened. This will improve with time provided the tobacco chewing stops completely. Get the oral surgeon to have another look in six months, he should be able to reassure you. Hope that helps. The photo shows nothing obvious. Thank you, this does make me feel better. He visits his doctor every 6 months so we will have him keep an eye on it.Are theses typical findings in someone who has chewed for 15 years? Also he has not chewed in 6 months, I am ever proud of him for quitting and I never thought I would see the day he would quit, I guess everything happens for a reason : )This message has been edited.
