Weird bump under tongue
 Login/Join
Posted
Hi, I'm a 20 year old, light smoker and drinker.

Recently I have developed an odd bump at the base of my tongue. It's fairly red due to the fact that I've been poking it with my tongue however there is a white color in it as well.

I uploaded pictures of it here:

Thanks in advance for any help identifying it.

Hi,

You do need to get this checked out. However, just to put your mind at rest until then, my 20 year old son had exactly the same. He saw an ENT specialist pretty quick due to the fact that my husband has had base of tongue cancer. The specialist said it was a blocked salivary gland. He said sometimes they operate to remove them but they would rather leave them alone as the operation can sometimes cause more harm than good and they generally tend to just disappear on their own - which it did.

Oh - and give up the smoking!!

Thanks for the information. It's definitely good to have an idea of what this bump might be. I couldn't find anything to help figure it out online.
Thanks again for the help!

Hi Leo,

Well, first of all you have to make an appointment with your doctor and/or dentist. Secondly, quit smoking! Easier said than done, I know, but when the cancer scare comes up and you're blaming smoking/drinking for it, you know it's way past the time to quit.

The sooner you see a medical professional, the sooner you'll have an answer. Most of the time it's a false alarm, but if it turns out to be cancer, the faster you begin treating it the easier it will be to cure.

Do yourself a favor and make that appointment immediately and prepare yourself to quit smoking. When you go to the doc, discuss quitting and perhaps you'll get some help there (free programs, hypnosis, Wellbutrin, nicotine patches, etc.)

Good luck to you and be sure to let us know how it turns out.

Mimi

Hi Leo

The most important (and hardest) thing for you to do would be to quit both smoking and drinking. {step down off soapbox}. Your doctor will be able to help you quit.

That brings up the next thing you should do: get an appointment with your doctor or dentist. It's extremely difficult (and borderline foolish) to diagnose any disease online.

Please let us know how things turn out for you.

Julia

Hi. I know this is an old thread but I recently found a lump under my tongue that looks identical to the first 2 pictures in this thread. Can you tell me when it turned out to be? I have an apt with the ENT in a week and I'm kinda freaking out. Mike
