Hi, i have also noticed recently a lump on the roof of my mouth. I feel it with my tounge and i think this makes it seem bigger. when i look at it in the mirror it looks raised and white, not sharp, a rounded lump. it is painfull to touch and i dont know wither or not to worry. how long is to long to wait to get it checked out? i am only 21 years old, am i naieve to think that my age means the chances of cancer are low?
i hope someone can put my mind to rest. thanks Ross... |

Hi Ross
Unfortunately, this isn't a good place to get a diagnosis. The best advice I can give is to see your gp or dentist about it as soon as you can. The best way to put your mind to rest, oddly enough, is to get this thing checked out. That way you can either get on with your life if it's not cancerous, or you can start treatment quickly if it is. Believe me, I'm really hoping for the former for you. I wish I could give you a better answer. Please let us know how this turns out. Julia Howdilly doodilly, survivorinos! |

Good evening Ross.
It was generally thought that the group most at risk of mouth cancer were elderly male smokers, and to a large extent this remains so but in recent times the net has been spreading wider to include younger people and more females but the incidence declines as you move away from the main "at risk group". Having said that, there are many reasons why lumps and bumps appear in the mouth and most of them are easily dealt with but from time to time more serious problems can crop up and delay in diagnosis increases the severity of the treatment so your best bet is to see your dentist or GP in the next day or two. You ask if you should worry about the lump, I don't think any of us have much control over whether we worry or not,so get professional advice them hopefully you will have no need to worry. Please let us know how you get on. Keep Smiling John |

I don't normally drink or smoke, but it was my friends birthday a week ago and I did a little of both. A day or two afterward my mouth was really sore on the front left side like i had bruised it, and it would kind of effect my teeth, but when it did it would switch teeth. The day after the soreness started it felt more smooth and still hurt but mostly only when i applied pressure. A couple days after it felt smooth it swelled up quite a bit (like a really stiff blister) in the course of less than 24 hours. It's been swollen for a couple days now and it's driving me crazy, though the pain's not as bad as when it wasn't swollen at all. I wish I could pop it but it really doesn't feel close to popping at all. It hurts more when I eat (especially cold things) but it's kind of bearable except for that I'm so scared. I'm going to make a doctors appointment this week or next I think, but I was wondering if you could speculate on what it is or how if I should see the dentist/doctor/ent?
I thought it was an abscess maybe but none of my teeth hurt when I tap on them, and I thought maybe it was a blocked salivary gland (it's not discolored or warm like an abscess) but I just don't know. I took a picture, any help would be much much more than appreciated. Thank you. here's what it looks like - http://img.photobucket.com/alb...es7he7ized/mouth.jpg |

Hi BJC
Could you have burned the roof of your mouth on pizza or something else hot and cheesy? You're doing the right thing by going to the doctor. How long was it after the birthday shindig that you first noticed the blister? Have you had anything like it before? Please let us know how things turn out. Julia Howdilly doodilly, survivorinos! |

I'm fairly certain I didn't burn my mouth on anything.
The birthday was on Friday, and it started hurting on Sunday, but it didn't blister until Wednesday. Does it not look like it's infected? Thank you for replying so quickly, I can't stop worrying about this! |

Last night before dinner, the roof of my mouth hurt, I felt it with my finger, and nothing was there.
About twenty minutes later, I stuck my finger back into my mouth where the pain was, and felt a hard lump. It hurt when I pressed on it but other than that, there was no pain. The bump is almost centered in the middle of my mouth. While my family and I ate dinner, the pain begain agian. But this time it was right next to my lump, not on it. After I was done eating, I touched the roof of my mouth where the pain was begianing to go away. Now I had two bumps right next to eachother. My first one is just a little bigger than the newer one. My parents told me not to worry about it, so I tried not to. But when I woke up the next morning, I had a new lump on the right side of my mouth, next to the very last tooth in my mouth. All three lumps only hurt when I touch them. They all have a whitish color to them. Should I be worring? I've never smoked in my life, I don't drink, over all I am a healthy teenager. What should I do? |

Hi Elissa
I don't know about you, but when I'm told "don't worry" that's usually just the thing I can't stop doing. (But I'm sure your parents mean well). The best suggestion I can give you is to see your family doctor and/or your dentist as soon as you can. Let us know how things turn out for you. Julia Howdilly doodilly, survivorinos! |

Hello Julia,
I seem to always worry when people tell me not to. I told my mother agian that I grew a new lump this morning. I have a dentist oppontment tomorrow. I will be sure to tell everyone what is going on with my mouth. Thank you for your reply. |

Well I went to the dentist today.
She told me that the lumps in my mouth were tori, and that I've always had them and they were always big and hard like they are now. I respect her opinion, but I know for a fact that they are knew. I have impressions of my mouth without any lumps in my mouth. Before I got the lumps I touched the roof of my mouth, and it was flat and normal. A few minutes later I recieved my first lump. My dentist was getting annoyed with me as I tried to explain that they were new, and that I was not born with this "tori". My mother is my whitness, she felt my mouth when I just had one, then agian when I got the other two. I know tori are common, but they don't just grow over night. Whats wrong with me? did my dentist wrongfully diagnose me? |

Hello! I am a 33 year old female, never smoked. I've had a terrible sore throat on and off for about a month - the soreness moved around from left to right, as usual sore throats do. Then it turned into chest congestion - pretty typical. Well, here's the non-typical part. Once the chest congestion cleared, the sore throat came back in the form of an extremely painful, VERY hard lump on the very back of the roof of my mouth. (sort of on the right side, behind where my wisdom teeth would be) The lump is probably the size of a marble. Or at least it feels that way when I touch it. Of course it looks smaller than it feels - mouth things can be deceiving.
The pain was so intense, I could not sleep, and immediately got an appointment with a (very well-respected) ENT. He took one look at my bump and literally said, "That is the weirdest thing I've ever seen. I've never seen anything like that". Great. He prescribed some antibiotics and told me he was 99.9% sure that it was not a tumor. He also took a biopsy (there was no puss in it, only blood) and I will get the results tomorrow. I'm a nervous wreck. Now, (2 days later), the bump barely hurts, but is still the same size and is still hard. I also can't even tell it is there unless I stick my finger in my mouth and feel for it. THIS makes me wonder if it has ALWAYS been there, or if it has been there for some time and only bothered me when it became infected. Help!! Do you think I should be worried??? |

Hi Elissa
I'm really sorry about the treatment you've gotten from your dentist. The best thing to do now is go to your family doctor. If he (or she) isn't able or willing to help you, go to an ENT. I'm unfamiliar with tori, but that you've developed pain in the roof of your mouth should definitely be checked out. I'm hoping that this all turns out well. Julia Howdilly doodilly, survivorinos! |

Hi everyone i have read almost everyones post and i have pretty much exactly the same lumps as other people describe, my question is how long can you have them before your diagnosed if it is cancer, 6 years ago i had my lumps under my tongue, that are small in the morning when i wake up and then after a day of worrying and playing with them seem loads bigger, checked out at the hospital and a ct scan revealed nothing and i was told to leave them alone, yeh easy for them to say they dont have huge lumps under their tongues! its been six years now they havent grown, they havent spread, does anyone have a clue to what they are?

I think I have the same thing that everyone is describing. I’m 33 year old male & smoked about 10 cigs a day for 8 years & quit 2 years ago. I had a bad cold about a month & a half ago that lasted for about 3 weeks. After the cold I had a sore throat that was slowly getting better. I was feeling better so I went out to a smoky bar & had a few drinks. After that it came back & my mouth felt like I had cuts that throbbed once in a while & was very irritated. The whole time I was feeling the hard pea size things in my mouth that on both the left & right sides of my mouth where the hard & soft palate meets by the wisdom teeth. They felt tender to the touch but they were on both sides and symmetrical, so I thought they were always there and I was just noticing them now because I had a sore mouth and have been feeling around more. Last night the right one was extra tender when I pushed it with my tongue & I felt pain shoot up my right eye & right temple. This morning on the way to work I was pushing the right pea size thing again and I felt a crack & a pop & then it flattened out. It didn’t hurt. It just surprised me. Now when I move my jaw around I feel pain all around the area. No puss or blood came out. It just popped under the flesh of the roof of my mouth. I scheduled an ENT doctor appointment today at noon. I will report back after, but I think I need to talk to a dentist as well.
