Lump in roof of mouth - not discolored

Hi,

I only noticed this a few days ago but i have this slight bump on the top of my mouth, right side, close to the middle. Im quite worried but my mom wont take me to a doctor or walk in clinic or dentist. im seeing a dentist next week and ill see what they think. I just want to know if i should get this checked out? or something. Im 13 and havent done anything ( drugs alchohol ). ive been having anxiety the past month so this could just be more worrying but you know, this is strange to happen right now, a random bump which seems kinda bony. 3 cm back from my front teeth. i have braces but it isnt near them so it cant be from friction of some sort. it isnt discoloured and not visible, but im worried, a lot.

Thanks,

Justin

I'm just speculating here but after reading pages and pages of post from people with the same symptoms as myself... the mysteriousa and elusive hard lump on the roof of the mouth that seems to have appeared out of nowhere... I'm going to bank on an allergist I spoke with professional opinion that it could be an infection that stems from a variety of things including but not limited to allergies. Which would explain why the individual who had a piece of bone had a bump from infection due to it, or another individual could have an infection due to blocked salivary glands. Whereas myself, I moved to TX from IL and have run into Cedar Fever from Hell and my sinus's hate me. So I don't find it at all hard to fathom that my soft and hard pallette would join in on the protest. Dr. V what are your thoughts?

Hello, it has been some time since I wrote. The initial lump that I had in my mouth (on the hard palate) appeared to be a tori (benign lump)which women tend to form. But recently, and overnight, a new lump grew in my mouth right next to the other one. The entire roof of my mouth was so sore that I could barely stand it. I had trouble even swallowing and I kept getting this thick mucus forming. My throat hurt terribly as well. Urgent care doctor thought it was some kind of infection, perhaps bacterial, gave me vicodin for the pain, naproxin for swelling. This lump literally formed over night and felt like someone had taken a chisel to my mouth. It has started to gradually get better. My doctor wants me to have an endoscope as I have GERD/LERD. She is concerned that acid is coming into my mouth. Has anyone had this happen to them? Would really appreciate any comments or feedback...Thank you

Desi - your post must have gotten lost in the shuffle. This rarely happens and Dr. Joshi is incredibly devoted to answering our questions. Perhaps my post will push this to the top of the forum and alert him to your post.

To both you and Java1: you've come to the right place for information and support. We, along with Deb in Oz, seem to submit our questions while our Brit doc and friends are sound asleep. They'll wake up eventually and get to us.

Can't give you any specific info - I'm a tonsil cancer survivor who will be two years cancer free when April rolls around.

Hang on....

Mimi

I haven't come across, or heard, of allergic reactions causing a swelling in he palate.

The new lump is unlikely to be related to Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease. Please get a proper diagnosis about the new lump from your dentist or local Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon.

Hi!
My name is Tanya. I had the same thing as you all. Just yesterday I had to have surgery to have it removed and have it biopsied. The surgery wasn't the bad and don't go to a dentist. They can't do anything about it, they'll send you to some sort of surgeon - I went to a facial surgeon did my surgery. And they put you out to do it.

I have a hole in the roof of my mouth now and on pain medicine. I have to gargle with Salt water, but other then that the surgery isn't that bad. You do have some pain, but it's not that bad of pain.

And you don't have to be a smoker to get mouth cancer. Cancer can affect anyone even those that aren't smokers. I had a friend that had lung cancer and she never smoked a day in her life. Think about all the bad stuff that you inhale everyday, pollution!!!

Hi my name is Sarah and something really freaky happened to me today!
As you said, I had the same, I had a small hard lump behind my top front teeth about 1cm behind. It felt like a hard but soft wart(yukk haha).
I couldnt see what it looked like as it was hard to check it out in the mirrow! Became very annoying and abit sore on my gums..
However today was day 4 with this little lump thing. I was chewing some gum, when "crunch", there was something hard in my chewy.
I found what it was, the lump was gone! I checked out what this hard thing was and it is white, about 2-3mm big and seriously looks like a miniture tooth with the root!!! How weird is that!!!!!!!
Am I strange or what!!!!

Hello Sarah

It appears that you might have had a little mesiodens supernumerary tooth erupt. Hope that helps explain your experience. Did you take a photo?

Best wishes

Hi everyone. I have had the same problem. A small olive-sized lump or bump appeared suddenly smack dab in the middle of the roof of my mouth. Just went to the dentist, he prescribed me vicodin and a zpack (which meant he had no idae what it was). I do have GERD, so i thought it may be acid burns. the pain is an 8 on a scale from 1 to 10, and not even the vicodin is helping much. It burns, throbs and gives me a headache and have been really really tired. I can hardly talk without the burning pain! I have had horrible sinuses here in OK, so i am actually hoping this is related and not a cancerous growth!

Keep fighting the good fight!

And please somebody help! I have missed 3 days of work from this (I talk for a living!)

Jake,

Doesn't sound like you're being given anything more than pain medication which means the problem is only being masked and not defined. I'd call my primary doc and ask to be sent to an ENT or the best specialist available - quickly!

The pain warrants an emergency appointment and you should be seen at least by the end of the week. If they can't fit you in tomorrow, say you'll just show up as if you're on standby. (Bring a book.) In my experience I'm usually seen within two hours - they believe you when you actually show up to sit and wait.

Good luck buddy. Let us know what happens.

Mimi

Hi Jake

As always, Mimi has dispensed excellent advice. Please go to an ENT or your local ER as soon as possible.

From what I understand, GERD usually causes esophageal problems.

I was given Vicodin when my little adventure started. Like you, I found it pretty much completely ineffective (but make sure to drink LOTS of water as it can cause constipation).

The only thing I can add to Mimi's advice is to take someone with you if at all possible, for moral support and to ask any questions you might have forgotten.

We're pulling for you!

Julia

Thank you both Mimi and Julia! I followed your advice and went to my primary care dr. He told me i had a really bad sinus infection that was manifesting as that lump in my mouth and all the pounding pain. And he was right! My gf had hung up a bunch of mildewed clothes to dry in the house and apparently i got sick from it. It has been almost 10 days since it appeared and after the zpack, it slowly but surely went away. Thank goodness! Thanks again and hopefully this post helps anybody who might have the same type of ailment Smiler

Jake,

What great news! I've been checking back frequently to find out what happened. About ten or so years ago I had a bad sinus infection with some pain, but not as bad as your's. I decided that since I felt like crap anyway, that I'd go ahead and wean myself off caffeine - trying to quit before only gave me headaches. One headache masked the other and I got rid of the infection and never missed the caffeine.

Thanks for letting us know the outcome. Hate it when people don't check back - it's like going to a movie and having to leave 15 minutes before it's over.

Mimi

PS: You're a great guy, I'm sure, but I hope you never have to return here again! This is the club no one wants to join.

Hi Jake

This is going to sound very strange, but congratulations on having a sinus infection! I've had a few of them (usually when I lived near a river), and I found myself wishing that my head would just pop to get rid of the pain and pressure.

I'd been wondering about you all weekend and I really am happy for you.

Julia
