I had glue ear in both ears following post-surgery RT for tonsil cancer.

Had a grommett fitted to my right ear which has stopped the pain & restored hearing fairly well.

They couldn't fir one to my left ear as my ear canal was too narrow (they also found the right ear tricky for the same reason). Pain in left ear has gone, but I'm still fairly deaf.

Other than waiting to see if it gets better on its own (consultant's current plan), is there anything that could be done? We're off on holiday in early April & I suspect that my blocked ear could be rather painfull on the flight - so I'd like it fixed before then!

Much to my surprise my consultant's plan of "wait & see" has worked and my ear has now "unblocked" all on its own!

Great news. Ask your consultant at your next appointment and let us know how/why he thinks it improved.

Saw consultant again today.

My main concern was an enlarged neck gland, but he doesn't seem over-concerned as it is on the opposite side to my original tumour. After a good look round he has concluded that it is probably due to my saliva gland not being able to drain very well. A couple of attempts at taking a needle biopsy of the gland failed, so I'm now going to be booked in to have one done with ultrasound.

Glue ear is now back in both ears as the grommett in my right ear has come out & the drum has healed. What I thought was my left ear curing itself was just me blowing some air in when I blew my nose, thus temporarily improving the hearing.

Any ideas on a way forward with my hearing? It is not very good at present.
