Bitter taste after tongue surgeryGo ![]() | New ![]() | Find ![]() | Notify ![]() | Tools ![]() | Reply ![]()
I had a tongue ulcer for 4 months that proved to be a squamous cell carcinoma (in situ). I had a partial glossectomy 3 months back. I received no further management. Everything went just fine, i had no post-operative complications and my speech. although not as before, but is satisfactory. I have a bitter taste at the side of the operation and this is present all day through. My left side of the tongue (healthy side)is quite normal. Has anyone ever felt the same or know anything about this? This message has been edited. Last edited by: Dr Vinod K Joshi,

Hello AMA I am sorry your post was missed! After surgery, the damage can affect the taste sensations. Sour, bitter, metallic tastes are all acidic in nature. Your treatment would have affected the taste buds in the tongue, the nerve endings and the pH of saliva in the mouth (more acidic). So it may help to neutralise the slightly more "acidic" oral environment by rinsing your mouth with a homemade alkaline mouthwash solution (pinch of salt (1/8tsp) and two pinches of baking soda (1/4tsp) in a glass of water). The baking soda neutralizes the oral acids and creates a "cleaner" taste sensation. You could also try a bicarbonate tooth paste. Let me know how you get on. I hope your taste has improved.
