Pretty freaked out by bony growth

Hey guys,

I've read a lot of stuff here and now I'm the one who needs advice.

Recently I've noticed a black nodule on the upper right side of my mouth. I'd place it pretty close to my molars on that side, maybe 1-3 cm behind it (more toward the tooth than the roof of my mouth). It's maybe 1 cm in size, at the most I'd say.

It's black, bony, and hard. It doesn't hurt or bleed, and I would have never thought anything of it, except my girlfriend noticed it while we were brushing our teeth a few days ago and pointed it out.

I've felt the area with my tongue, I can't feel the hard part with my tongue, but mostly just figured I'd burned the roof of my mouth on hot food or something, and knew it took a week or so to heal up all the way. I haven't noticed that it has gotten bigger over the past week since we discovered it.

Now I'm freaking out, because she's afraid it's cancer and I'm probably not able to get to the dentist for a few weeks. I think I'm mostly scared because I haven't seen any posts that explain a similar problem. I once had something I think it was called an enamel pearl, but it was on the other side of that area, but it was actually on the side of my tooth, I never got an exact diagnosis, because it went away after a little while, but I remember it being similar in texture.

I'm going to see a doctor as soon as I can, because I have a few other dental problems to fix, but this one has me concerned. I'll provide any information I can.

Here's a picture, had trouble getting a good really focused one, but this one shows it pretty well, at least the general idea of what I have going on.

I appreciate any information that anyone can provide me.

Thank you in advance,
Phil

Good you have made an appt with doc as no one can diagnose over email - however I think Dr Joshi replied on a similar post and it turned out to be minor - I can't find that post right now but I know he will be on to respond - and again the best is that you are going to see a professional in person!! Eat well, take care of your teeth adn TRY not to stress til you can get to the Docs - let us all know how it goes!

Hello Phil

I can't think what it can be! You will have to ask your dentist.

Let us know how you get on.

Best wishes

Hey, thanks for the replies, sorry I haven't been back sooner. I've been busy with work and some some major family issues.

I haven't had a chance to get to my dentist yet, I was going to go between Christmas and New Years, but his office was closed.

I've noticed that it seems to be healing up a bit, it doesn't feel as pronounced in my mouth, but it's still there.

Hopefully I can get an appointment in the next week or so to get it professionally looked at. My old dentist didn't see eye to eye with me on my lack of insurance, so I've been looking for a new one, closer to home as well, hopefully to get a program set up to get all of my tooth problems fixed.

I'll keep updating as time goes on.

Thanks for your help and advice,
Phil

Well everyone, I have results about my problem!

I went to my dentist, and he didn't know exactly what it was either!!!

He had an idea, but sent me to an oral surgeon to have that, a wisdom tooth and a broken tooth removed.

My surgeon was amazing and said that he has seen the exact same thing one other time in his career--the root of a baby tooth that had broken off and formed a cyst around it.

I was so happy that I found out what it was..

So 7 fillings and $2500 later, my mouth is getting in pretty decent shape!

Good for you! I hope you never have to return here to join this motley crew.

I've heard of such oddities but never one like your's although after thinking about it for a while, it sounds perfectly plausible.

I have a Brit friend who had a lump in his abdomen that turned out to be some bone and hair contained in a sac from his unborn twin (weird, I know. Google it for further weirdness.)

Good luck my friend. I love a success story.

Hi Philly!

So glad to hear it has all been sorted out and was nothing to worry about.

Your talking about insurance makes me glad I am in the UK as I have just made an appt with my NHS dentist for a check up and it will not cost much at all.
