Hi there, I just got back from the dentist and he's referred me to the hospital to get a lump on the underside of my tongue looked at. He didn't really check it out, and said he thought it was nothing to worry about, but I'm scared witless. It's just above where the tongue joins the base of your mouth, on the left side, and it's flesh coloured, and its not hard from what I can make out, it's like somethings just decided to grow. I'm rather scared, what should I expect, do you know how long I'll have to wait?

Hey Vicky, thanks for your kind words. He didn't mention biopsy, but I assume that is what will happen with this. Urgh, I'm very scared, but at least they're doing something about it now...

I'll keep you informed!

Hello Lydia

Remember that dentists will refer anything out of the ordinary to the hospital specialist at the maxillofacial dept. It DOES NOT mean you have a mouth cancer!

Have a look at normal floor of mouth structures. . There is a """V""" shaped hump of tissue in the floor of the mouth under the tongue that houses a series of saliva gland ducts.Sometimes it can get more prominent. The two largest ducts are in the center just in front of the attachment of the lingual frenum and are called Warton's Ducts. They empty the submandibular salivary glands. These ducts can be quite active in some persons, and upon occasion, a """fountain""" of saliva may erupt from them while the patient is talking causing one of those embarrassing moments. Smiler

Sometimes, saliva can leak out of the duct into the tissue causing a swelling called a Mucocele or Ranula . There are other growths as the Torus Mandibularis on the inside of the lower jaw but these are bound to the underlying bone and cannot be moved around with finger pressure. Normal structures can be mistaken for pathology and you could be referred for an opinion too. Hope that helps.

Best wishes

Firstly, thanks to Vicki for your prayers, that is incredibly kind of you to think of me.

Dr Vinod, I can't really see anything thats like what I have in my mouth, but hopefully it is just a bit of swollen tissue. I do still have a swollen lymph gland in my neck, but it could be anything, as I'm always run down. It's unfortunately a side affect of being a dj! I don't smoke or drink, and there is no history of cancer in my family, although I did smoke for ten years (gave up in 2001). I'm hoping this is all working in my favour...

I can't wait to see the doctor at the hospital, just so he can tell me either way!

I wanted to ask a question if thats okay? This morning, I woke up and the right side of my mouth, well, the gums at the top, were incredibly painful. So much so I felt like I couldn't bear it. They felt like they were burning. It went away within a couple of hours, but that side still feels sore. I have also noticed I had two small white marks, which I've had there for a good while, that I'd thought had gone away. Should I be worried?

Lydia, try not to worry, I know it is difficult but try not to.

Your symptoms could be any number of things. When you see your doctor make sure they address all your concerns so you can get your piece of mind.

Lydia, They will get to the bottom of all this at the hospital. Please try not to worry tho I know that is a stupid thing for me to say. Esp. after reading all the posts on here. But this doesn't mean this is what is happening to you. I am praying that this is nothing that a few scripts can't take care of...You have some friends to talk to right here...Anytime, Vicki

It feels like forever to wait. I wondered if Dr Vinod would be kind enough to answer a query. I've recently developed a lump where my tonsil used to be, on the right side. It's about half a centimetre, and it has three white areas in it. I'm very very worried about it, I've got three raised lymph glands, and I've got some pain in my neck. Does cancer present itself like this. I did wonder if I had palatine tonsil stones, but then I remembered I have no tonsils! Please help, I'm worried sick...

Hello Lydia

I am not a throat specialist but there are many other explanations for what you describe - so it is best not to worry now. It saps your energy.

When is your appointment with hospital? If you are concerned, do ask for an earlier appointment citing your concern.

Best wishes

I haven't even had a letter yet, and it's been two weeks almost! It's rubbish round here, you have to wait months for any sort of medical care, it's at least a week just for a appt with the gp. I'm going to talk about concerns with my gp today and try not to worry too much until I know either way. As you say, it saps energy, and I need energy, I barely get sleep with the job I do anyway!

Thanks Dr Joshi!

Lydia, I don't like the way they do things over there. I am sorry to say that. But it seems that the wait is so long for everything over there. I would go nuts if I had to wait that long. It is not like that here. The longest for me was that one full week. I had to wait. I about pulled my hair out. At that was because the computers got a worm at the place that I had the test done. I feel so bad for you and all the others that have to wait for weeks and weeks. That to me is cruel to do to a person. Talk to us,, we will be here everyday if we have to to hold your hand while you wait...Whatever it takes,,,,OKAY? Always Vicki Lynn

Hey Vicky, you're so lovely! Well, I went to the doctor, and she said she thought it was some ulcerated tonsil tissue that has got infected. Thing is, it doesn't hurt! Still, I'll trust what she says for now and wait to see what happens. I can't help but still wonder though, I mean, it's not as if a quick look with a torch has really confirmed anything.

For now I won't worry...thanks for your lovely support people. Smiler
