Hi. I am new to this board, but have some questions that are concerning me. First of all, a couple of weeks ago I went to a new dentist(mind you I had put dentistry off for several yrs). They did the regular x-ray, cleaning, etc... At the end, the dentist was concerned with my x-ray. The x-ray reveals a mass at the bottom of my jaw, in which he said looks like Osteoslerosis. This isn't the big area-- there is a white circular mass around my molar and the root is missing. Today, the dentist said that he wasn't sure what it was, but the oral surgeon would have to check this out. I keep thinking it is cancer, and have been making myself ill about it. I have lost relatives in their 80s to bone cancer... I have a lo and I am fairly young, but don't know what to do. My DH and family tells me to stop worrying, but this is so scary... Can someone give me some words of wisdom,etc... I originally thought this could be a cyst, but the doctor informed me if it were the case, it would be localized and dark, not white and sporadic in my jaw bone. Please write me. Hello Maxmama77 It is most unlikely to be a cancer. I think it is an idiopathic osteosclerosis. It appears that yours might be the second case in the world where a root is resorbed!  Have a good day. Dear Dr. Joshi, Thank you so much for sending this article to me. I do hope this is the case, as compared to the other, yet I do not know. Yesterday, the dentist took an x-ray of the opposite side of mouth for some fillings. After my appointment, he began looking at my lesion again asking the date of my biopsy, etc... He made the comment that it did look like my growth was "spreading" but I do not know if he meant to the new x-ray on the right side of my face where the filling was (as though it would spread to the right that quickly), or he meant the original x-ray taken a few weeks ago, which it did look like he was reviewing. I am thinking he was reviewing the old x-ray, but I am going to contact the office today. I am kind of lost right now. I did tell the dentist I go back in May 28 for the biopsy-if it were immediately spreading, I would think he would push the biopsy to a different date, but not sure. It is so nice that you have given me a different view of this. This is troubling me a great deal. Thank you for your help. | ||||

Hello maxmamma77 can you explain your name? My advice: Even a benign lesion like IO can grow, but very slowly over years. Hence it was an incidental finding. I would stop worrying about what your dentist says. He is not the expert!

Dear Dr. Joshi, Thanks- it is true he hasn't seen it yet. I am just panicy right now. Oh, my username is for my son Matthew Alexander, or a combo of his name "Max." And of course, I am his mother- My name probably sounds quite weird on this board, but it is a combo of names. The 77 was just the number I selected to my name, as I like the number  Thank you for your help. I will give you an update in May about what the Oral Surgeon says. I really think this is wonderful to find such a helpful dentist who responds to the patients promptly online. Also, I was searching different sites, and found your terrific site that is apparently in the UK. Although our family is in Louisville, my husband's family is from England and Scotland- a very beautiful place to be. Hi Dr. Joshi, I moved my date up for tomorrow for the biopsy. I did tell my OS that I didn't have pain in my mouth, but have had a pulling sensation in my neck (which I did notice is below the area in question). The OS didn't act too concerned, but I don't know if this would be considered jaw/tumor pain or what. It happens every now and then and isn't disruptive. The OS felt my lymph nodes and said they seem fine. I had my GP check this area out several months ago, but she thought it was a pulled musle. I really hope things go well tomorrow. | ||||

Hello Maxmama77 It is good to have the biopsy done tomorrow. Getting it done sooner will avoid your worrying for even longer. I assume that they will numb the area and take a sample of bone and that it will be sore afterwards - a bit like after an extraction. If the lesion has been extremely slow growing and only incidentally found on a x=ray by the dentist, it looks promising as most mouth cancers are NOT found accidentally. So I hope that cheers you up. Hi Maxmama77, Hopefully you will get positive news. Just remember God never gives us more than we can handle. My husband and I have really leaned on that phrase over the past fews months. We are here in Tennessee and although we found an excellent local ENT in Greeneville, Duke University has one of the best oral cancer centers in the U.S. We will hope that none of the will be important to you after tomorrow and you will receive positive new.
