Hi everyone,

Rod is 3 months out of treatment now and is trying to eat everything. The dry mouth complicates things so swallowing is still difficult. Has anyone heard of or used salagen tablets...I think that is what they are called and if so do you get them from your doctor? And what about taste, do certain tastes come back before others? Razzer He can taste chocolate & sweets alot but other foods still have no taste. Thanks everyone& God bless!

Maureen, Hello there, I used salagen for almost 2 years off and on..My doctor told me to use them for a couple of months then stay off for a month. I did this for about 2 years total. I found that some tastes do come back and some don't. After 2 years tho I could taste everything, tho I couldn't eat everything. LOL. Salt was a problem for me. I couldn't drink any soda's. I usually got full of liquids before I ever got full of food. Because it takes so much to help the food go down. This was in the very beginning. I am amazed that Rod can eat chocolate this soon after treament. I love chocolate, WHO DOESN'T, but I could not eat that for almost a year or longer...So lucky him...Right now I would love to eat anything!!!! I did manage a bite of applesauce. Yes, Yes I did. Some of it went down. Some of it didn't. It is going to take a lot of work for this to happen,,,,but it will,,,I just know it....I will never eat like I once did...But I do so hope that I get off this feeding tube one day....Hey A girl can wish,,,Always Vicki
P.S. Rod keep up the good work...

Life's a funny old trick really. One of my great friends has multiple sclerosis. Can eat and swallow what she wants but can't taste a thing.
I can taste and smell everything, oh how I crave it all, but can't swallow it!
Poetic justice or something.

Yes Maur--great that Rod can enjoy chocolate. Tell him to have it in muffins--chocolate chp muffins--and that will give him some weight.

Ishbel,
Thanks for the idea about the muffins, passed it on to Rod, he will try it.He will try anything at this point to gain weight, he is very thin. The peg tube is out but I wish he would continue to drink the boost & ensure for added calories. He is trying milkshakes but for some reason the cold hurts his throat and he gets diarrhea. Eeker Like Vicki, soda is out.So he will continue drinking tea and water for now. Thanks so much for your ideas!Maureen Smiler
