I have been chewing on and off for about 2 years. I have quit for about 2 weeks now, but should I be worried?

Hello dw_h

The risk was increased by chewing tobacco. The longer you chewed the greater the risk. By stopping you have reduced the risk (good thing) but it will take a while for the risk to return to where it would have been if you had never chewed tobacco. But that is not a cause for worry, only a cause for vigilance. Have a good day.

Best wishes

Thank you so much for the kind words. I have wanted to quit for so long, and it has been very difficult, but each day it gets a little easier. The biggest challenge is not giving in during times of stress.

Hello dw_h

You might find the following helpful:
  • Spitting into the Wind: The Facts About Dip and Chew A free booklet that discusses harmful spit tobacco use in a colorful and graphic format. It includes information on addiction, toxic chemicals in tobacco and snuff, medical problems from use, warning signs of oral cancer, and tips to quit.

  • Spit Tobacco: A Guide for Quitting, an online booklet designed specifically for men who have decided to quit using spit tobacco or who are thinking about quitting. It contains information about developing a plan for quitting, as well as information on over-the-counter and prescription medications available to help break the nicotine habit.

Thank You! Part of the reason I posted is that I noticed a small lump on the inside of my lower lip. The surface is not discolored or sore, and it is not painful. Could this be do to anything other than cancer? I am hoping to be referred to an ENT next week, and I am curious as to what they will say. All I can do is wait for now...

Thanks again. I went into urgent care last week, and the doctor took a look and said that it was nothing to worry about. He said that to follow up with my primary, and get referred to an ENT if I am still worried or if the spot becomes sore or starts to grow. I will see my TP tomorrow, but I am already feeling a lot better.
