soft palate cancer

First, I am a smoker (I know I need to quit). I am curious to know if I had invasive cancer in my soft palate, would it be hard or soft, and would it be able to be palpitated with fingers. I can feel what seems to be a a mass on the right side of my soft palate running back toward my tonsils. I can only feel it with my tongue. When I palpitate with my fingers, both sides of my soft palate feel about the same. I also see and feel one whitish raised line, probably about one centimeter in length at the back of this 'mass'(in the back of the soft palate). I'm going to the dentist on Oct 27 for a routine check up, so I'll have them check then, but in the mean time, does this sound like it could be an invasive cancer of the soft palate?

and are there any normal anatomical structures that could make you feel large soft lumps in your soft palate?

Hello dkaminski

Most mouth cancers cause a problem: pain, difficulty with swallowing, talking, etc. Have a look at Examination Technique with Normal Findings and Structures Mistaken for Disease . You might also have explored the pterygoid hamulus or the hamular process of the pterygoid bone.

So, it could just be a normal structure that you have just noticed recently. Let us hope so. It is prudent to go and see your dentist for an opinion.

:soapbox: Do quit smoking.

Best wishes
