Blood Blister on Tongue

Hello...

I have had a blood blister on my tongue for a couple weeks now, anyway as far as I know. I'm sure it's been there longer. I noticed a burning sensation in my mouth and decided to check it out with the ol flashlight. There it sits on the back of my tongue near my circumvallate papilla. It's about 1/16-1/8 inch in size and has not changed. I of course got online and have read all sorts of scary stuff, so I headed to my doctor. He said I had stomatitis and not to worry. Well I'm a worry wort so I went to my dentest. He finally saw the blister and told me it was an inflamed papilla. Can this be true? It looks just like a tiny blood blister with a tiny white dot in the center. I guess I'm getting tired of it being there plus the fact that my tongue burns. Does anybody know more... should I proceed to my dermatologist or perhaps an ent? My dentist said he would not do anything about it if it proceeded to be there for several more weeks... but the more I've read it says that if something stays around for 14 days to have it looked at. Am I paronoid? Does anybody know more about these, how long they last, what causes them, and how long the stomatitis will last. HELP!!!!

Hi eligmon
Your doctor and dentist have had a look and it doesn't seem to be a mouth cancer - that's good news! There are several reasons for blood blisters - see the post blood blisters in mouth. Sometimes we never know. Let's hope it goes away soon. Let us know how it turns out.

Hello Dr. and thanks for your reply...

I would like to ask you a couple other questions... so what would a blood blister look like if it were cancerous... I've read on several sites that if you do have a persistant blister that it could be cancer... Could you tell me what the difference would be?

and, would it cause me to have stomatitis???

thanks!

Dr. Joshi...

Could you explain what a blood blister whould look like if it were cancer... would the skin around it be affected? What appears to be one is raised, like a pustule and red... has a small tip thats white... back on my tongue... plus my tongue burns... Before I make another trip to the doctor I would really appreciate a bit more information

thanks!

Hi eligmon

You need to ask your doctor those questions. Cancer in the mouth usually presents as shown in these Clinical Photographs.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes
