Painful white lesions

Hello,

After recovering from a bad case of the flu a few days ago, I suddenly developed a number of small, white, painful lesions on my tongue, cheeks, and lips. Moreover, my gums have become extremely sensitive to the point that I can hardly chew. This literally happened in 1-2 days. Prior to this I had never had any trouble with gum sensitivity or such sores. I should also mention that the [my] left side of my neck has also begun to feel mildly sore around the area where the gland [I can't remember it's name] is located.
I am currently gargling [since this morning] with a natural extract that I bought at the pharmacy [it's a Russian product called 'Stomatofit']. Some of the lesions have become less painful, but others have emerged [on my lips]. I've visited a doctor, who dismissed my concerns about cancer and told me my problem was caused 'by the cold'--I should mention that I'm currently living in Azerbaijan, where doctors often seem to have somewhat folksy approaches to medicine. Very charming, but I'm still quite concerned. I plan to keep gargling-- is there anything I should keep a look out for?
Thanks and best, sorry about the long post.

Jim.

Hello James

Unlikely to be a mouth cancer - don't usually present as a number of small, white, painful lesions on my tongue, cheeks, and lips. Probably a viral infection related to your immunity being reduced by your flu as seen with 'cold sores'. So gargling /rinsing your mouth with warm salt water will help (slightly antiseptic, etc) but most of these infections heal in about 14 days or so. Meanwhile, take it easy while your body recovers.

Best wishes
