my husband and I have just come back from the hospital after he was referred by his dentist. He has a white ulcer on his cheek and also alongside his tongue. The hospital are now referring him for a biopsey, we are both so scared. He doesnt smoke and drinks very little, and it is giving him no pain. Can anyone reassure us.I am so frightened.

Hello Charlie

Going to the hospital for a biopsy can be worrying. It is usual to worry when referred to the hospital. You don't know what to expect and all kinds of fears arise in the mind. It can get terrifying. Your dentist noticed a 'white ulcer' that he couldn't explain and I assume has been there for some time (> 3weeks).

What is interesting is that (1) the cheek ulcer is white, (2) not painful and (3) there is an adjacent ulcer on the tongue and (4) someone is a bank manager! Could it be that your husband has been clenching his teeth together and been nipping tongue and cheek causing the 'white ulcers' like seen in cases of hyperkeratosis?

Please try to relax, and do normal things, as often the ulcer is NOT Cancer . Do try and relax by going for a walk, shopping, going for a meal, watching a movie, being with friends and family, etc. Don't let fear sap your energy. You will worry enough if the biopsy shows there is really something to worry about . Even then, focus your energies on getting better.

Let us know how things turn out. We will be here for you to help where we can.

Best wishes

It now appears that they suspect it could be leukoplakia, I have looked this up and although it says that it is a precancerous lession, we are still very worried. The hopital cant see him for 6 weeks, then we will have to wait two weeks for the results of the biopsey Can you tell us anything more about leukplakia please. Thanks fo r your support x
