I AM ABOUT TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO SEE AN EAR, NOSE AND THROAT DOCTOR BECAUSE I HAVE STARTED TO SEE SOME THINGS ON THE BACK OF MY THROAT. I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH HPV WHEN I WAS SIXTEEN AND HAD ABNORMAL CELLS ON MY CERVIX. I HAD THE PROCEDURE TO FREEZE MY CERVIX... CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT IT'S CALLED. BUT ANYWAY, I DON'T RECALL MY DOCTOR TELLING ME IF IT WAS HPV-16 WHICH IS APPARENTLY THE STRAIN THAT IS ASSOCIATED WITH CANCER. I HAVE HAD NORMAL PAP SMEARS SINCE. I DO PARTICIPATE IN ORAL SEX. A FEW MONTHS AGO I STARTED TO FEEL A STRANGE, FULL SENSATION IN MY THROAT AND I HAVE SEEN BLOOD IN MY SPIT IN THE MORNINGS. NOT ALWAYS BUT SOMETIMES. AND NOW I SEE IN THE BACK OF MY THROAT SOME GROWTHS (I THINK). I AM REALLY SCARED. MY QUESTION RIGHT NOW IS, CAN KISSING MY BOYFRIEND SPREAD THIS TO HIM? OBVIOUSLY HE HAS HAD CONTACT WITH THE VIRUS, BUT CAN ME KISSING HIM GIVE HIM THE CHANCE OF GETTING ORAL CANCER? THAT SOUNDS REALLY STUPID, I KNOW, BUT IF I AM PUTTING HIM AT MORE RISK... I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW.

It's funny I came across this because I was just wondering about this topic. I still have a little lump in the indside of my lower lip, and I just had a abnormal pap come back, this was in Jan, I am awaiting my second pap results now, they are not sure if I have HPV. So needless to say with the lump in my mouth I am tending to start worring again.
As for your boyfriend, he may have already had the strain and gave it to you, OR vice versa. It is skink to skin contact so yeah, he could have it as well and be at risk, I am assuming. Most HPV either cause warts our the high grade can cause woman with abnormal paps, so far I don't know if men can be affected. But I suppose oral cancer could pose a problem in them. I always thought it affected woman cervicaly, now something else to worry about! I hope they find a vaccine soon! |

Hello Ladies
I didn't realise what I would be getting into when I started this message board! HPV is one of the most common virus groups in the world to affect the skin and mucosal areas of the body. Some HPV viruses are linked to benign infections such as warts and papillomas. Genital HPV infections are common. Genital warts are generally associated with two HPV types, numbers 6 and 11 and can be sexually transmitted. The warts tend to be infective, but can be treated. There is no reliably effective treatment though it looks nicer if warts are removed. The problem is that HPV is often clinically undetectable. Since HPV travels via skin contact, you run the risk of moving fluids from your hand to mouth, or hands to genitals if you touch yourself later without washing your hands thoroughly. So, kissing Though 50-60 percent of US college-aged women have HPV, but only 10 percent have lesions. It is thought that 95 percent of women will get rid of the infection within a year. Most HPV infections of this type are very common, harmless, non cancerous and easily treatable. Only 10 percent of infections involve cancer-causing strains like HPV-16 which has been implicated in cervical cancer and, more recently, in tonsillar tissue at the back of the throat. Men are at greater risk than women of developing oral cancer. This is thought to be related to significant differences in male sexual behaviour. Men with oral cancer self-reported a lower age for their first sexual intercourse, an increased number of sexual partners, and a history of genital warts. Condom use, and sensible behaviour, is considered to be protective against HPV infection. It pays to get tested for HPV, to know your partner and your risks, and to learn about using barriers for safer oral sex. There is more detailed information at this article on Sexual Pleasure and Health. A bit saucy, but informative! :boxedin: Best wishes Vinod :coffee: Disclaimer: Please see your own dentist/doctor for a proper diagnosis as my words should not, in any circumstances, be taken as dental/medical advice.
